<itunes:summary>The 2010-11 academic year will see the launch of a new corporate logo for WBS.Before the summer, WBS Dean Mark Taylor announced, "I have asked for this change because it is essential that our corporate identity remains relevant to our internal and external stakeholders, fit for purpose in our ambitious quest to be the leading university-based business school in Europe, and to align our strengths with those of Warwick University as a whole, with its core values of excellence and entrepreneurial flair."The new blue logo is in the University corporate colour and highlights the WBS acronym while retaining the full name 'Warwick Business School' within the design. WBS is a young, dynamic and innovative organization, which is reflected in the use of lower case lettering in the acronym. With a formal launch date of 27 September for the change-over to the new look, preparations are already well under way.Rachel Killian, Acting Head of the Marketing & Communications Office, commented, "This is an exciting initiative from our Dean, and I and the rest of the team look forward to bringing the new logo to life across all our branded publications, webpages and other media. Our design team is both skilled and experienced in all aspects of corporate identity."The timing of the launch means that the change-over can be achieved with the least possible cost and waste. We have always used the Summer Vacation to update and produce all our brochures and printed stationery for the coming year. Additionally, this step change gives us the opportunity to print in bulk which will greatly reduce these costs, and by using our in-house expertise for web site and other branding updates, we not only save on costs but also ensure consistency across the spectrum of our corporate identity."</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Mike Bastin, Warwick graduate (MBA Class of 1991) and MBA lecturer is interviewed for the China Daily.

In the article Different degrees of real enterprise, Mike argues that "Western-style management degrees do not always prepare students for the challenges of working in Chinese corporations" and that "when they (students) return to the work environment they find it quite tough. It is like an endurance test and they are often asked to work long hours."

He goes on to say that, "when they are eventually put into senior positions, however, they will be the ones who will change the business culture."

<itunes:summary>More wedding bells, this time for Mark and Becki Shortt nee Roberts. Here Becki tells their story.

"Mark Shortt and I (Becki Roberts) met on the second day of the BSc Management Sciences course back in October 2001.

After three years of working hard and playing harder (most of which we can remember) we both graduated and started our careers at Delotte in London. Mark is still with Deloitte, but I have since moved on to work with Camelot (the National Lottery). We bought our first home together in Hertfordshire in 2006 and have been very happy together.

We had a beautiful winter wedding (20 February 2010) at Tewin Bury Farm with family and many of our friends from Warwick and beyond, followed by a blissful honeymoon in the Maldives."</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>The steering committee from the WBS Mentoring programme and current mentor Janet Fairlie Vogt, wish to extend their congratulations to Nicola Bullivant on the recent birth of her baby boy. Nicola, a recent MBA graduate (05 - 09) who currently works as a placement manager for Aston Business School is pictured here with her son Jacob Samuel, who was born on the 13th of July.

Nicola joined the pilot programme back in January 2009 and was delighted to be given the opportunity to continue her relationship with mentor Janet for a further year when the official programme was launched in February 2010.

Nicola applied for the mentoring pilot whilst awaiting the results of her MBA, which required balancing work and home life alongside studying and so one of her reasons for joining was to 'have a fresh sounding board for ideas.' Nicola also commented on her application that she wished to 'be able to share difficulties with my mentor and to perhaps tap into their experiences and expertise. I also feel that the mentoring relationship will enable me to gain in confidence - this is important after having spent five highly successful years in my current role.... I hope to challenge and stretch myself further.'

Nicola decided to make best use of her excellent mentoring relationship with her mentor Janet; putting her place on the programme on hold for the next year whilst she was on maternity leave. Janet has wasted no time in volunteering to support another mentee in the meantime and has already been matched to another distance learning student who had been previously wait-listed.

We wish Nicola and her family all the best and extend an invitation, when our pilot mentees unofficially "graduate" from the programme next January, to Nicola and baby Jacob to join our party.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Alicia Clegg, journalist with the Financial Times is keen to here from WBS alumni who have nursed their business back from the brink. She is especially keen to here from international alumni.

Further details of the planned article by Alicia follows:

Back from the Brink

How do you nurse your business back to health after a really crushing setback
that jeopardizes its reputation? I have in mind something on a par with Heston
Blumenthal (a leading UK restaurateur) having to temporarily shut his three
Michelin starred restaurant, after his diners went down with food poisoning, or Toyota recalling its cars.

Relevant angles include:
Containing the crisis e.g. recalling a faulty productWorking out how and why the problem happened - was it simple human error or
symptomatic of some deeper underlying flaw? Impact on customer goodwill and what the entrepreneur did to restore confidence
and bring customers back to the foldHandling the emotional fallout, particularly the impact on morale (yours and
your employees)What the entrepreneur learned from the experience and how the company has
changed as a result.
We appreciate it when entrepreneurs are frank, not just about the problems that led to the crisis but also about their handling of the situation and what they learned from the experience.

The ideal business will have a turnover somewhere between GBP3m and GBP50m and must
be owner-managed, i.e. run by an entrepreneur.

For an example of Alicia's work, please see her article on 'When letting go is hard to do'

If you fit the criteria and would like to tell your story, please contact Alicia directly and as soon as possible. alicia.clegg@btinternet.com</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>The new look Diploma launches in Autumn 2010. Building on the excellent work delivered by Andrew Hardwick, Nick Barclay has refreshed the design to meet the changing needs of the business community.

It is designed to develop an understanding of pragmatic managerial and commercial models and theories. Delegates learn to apply these to issues and challenges in the workplace and develop entrepreneurial approaches to solving real business-critical problems. A new immersion week explores personal effectiveness and leadership styles and now also opens a fast-track route to the prestigious Warwick MBA by letting you apply for exemption from three of its core modules. Ideal target groups for this are individuals with a middle-to-senior management role, with full support of their sponsoring organisation. The study programme is part-time over 15 months and has 4 core modules, delivered in short workshops, 1 team consulting project and 1 work-based individual project.

Nick Barclay said: "The new Diploma will be an excellent springboard for managers to get to grips with the skills and approaches required to enhance their effectiveness within their own organizations. I am looking forward to delivering an exciting and dynamic programme that will challenge, inspire and delight its participants."

Fees for 2010 are GBP7,995, including all course materials and catering during the workshops. Overnight accommodation is not included, but can be booked on campus or at other venues nearby.

Interested parties can get a taster of the programme during one of two taster events on the 2 September and 22 September at Warwick.</itunes:summary>

Students seeking CIPD accreditation take a specific pathway through their MA, known as the CIPD route. This involves an additional module, delivered throughout the academic year, as well as associated activities that enable students to demonstrate continuing professional development.

Catherin Gordon, Administrative Director for Specialist Masters at WBS, commented, "Gaining this re-accreditation was by no means a rubber-stamping exercise. It involved an in-depth review of the MA course content, teaching and learning methods, and assessment methods and quality procedures. It also involved a visit by the CIPD's Quality Assurance Panel, who met with key staff including the course's External Examiners."</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Innovative budget hotels business Sleeperz has secured a major GBP7m investment to fund future growth in the UK - with the target of achieving a portfolio of 10 hotels by 2015.

Just 18 months after opening the first in a new generation of compact lifestyle hotels - in the Welsh capital of Cardiff - Sleeperz has succeeded in raising funding to build a second hotel, in Newcastle, and earmarked five further sites for development.

The finance has been raised from the Co-operative Bank, together with equity funding from the company's current investors, including Andre Hoffmann, and a new investor, Connection Capital.

Preparatory work for the building of a 98-bedroom, six-storey Sleeperz hotel in the heart of Newcastle is now underway, with full construction starting this October and a projected opening date of October 2011.

Heads of terms have also been secured by the company to develop hotels at five further sites next to mainline rail stations, including Liverpool, Birmingham and Manchester.

Sleeperz Hotels Chief Executive David Myers (FTMBA 1999-01, Alumni Board Vice-Chair) described the GBP7m investment as "a major endorsement in the Sleeperz proposition of compact lifestyle hotels in prime city centre locations offering great value for money."

He said: "Raising finance is very tough in this market, and to secure GBP7m of investment is an exceptional achievement, particularly for a hotel business of our size. The hotel market is littered with single-site niche businesses that have failed to expand and progress to develop a second hotel.

"Sleeperz brings something new and exciting to the market and, with the backing of major investors, we are here for the future. Our business target is to develop and build 10 Sleeperz hotels by 2015."

Having opened in November 2008 as the storm clouds gathered on the worst recession in living memory, Sleeperz hotel Cardiff succeeded in achieving over 60 per cent occupancy in its first year. It is currently performing significantly ahead of its competitive set, according to the TRI Hospitality Consulting benchmarking organisation, recording year-on-year sales and profit growth. The hotel is ranked fourth out of 92 on the Trip Advisor travel review website, and records a 90 per cent guest satisfaction rate on LateRooms.com.

Sleeperz hotel Newcastle will mirror the same ethos of compact, stylish air conditioned rooms in a prime central location. The new-build development will be adjacent to Newcastle Central Railway Station.

"Newcastle is one of the leading UK hotel markets for RevPar room rate performance. The city boasts a very strong leisure and corporate market and there will be few hotels - if any - with the location that this site will give us. We are very excited about this development," said Mr Myers.

"As with Sleeperz hotel Cardiff, we will create quality stylish compact rooms with fresh, colourful and contemporary interiors. All of this will be available to the consumer at ro...</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>An investment network formed to support fledgling businesses has enjoyed tremendous growth over the past 12 months.

The Minerva Business Angel Network, based at the University of Warwick Science Park's Venture Centre, was set up 15 years ago to assist SMEs with high growth potential to access funding.

Tim Powell, head of the network, used his extensive local business network and, linking with the WBS Entrepreneurship Network, hosted angel investor development seminars every few months and gradually attracted enough interest to form a syndicate of investors.

These investors now meet every month at the Science Park to view potential investment opportunities.

The seminars and the concept of the investment syndicate has proved such a hit that over 30 Business Angels have now joined the group with more expected in the future.

<itunes:summary>Puya Rasekhi (DLMBA 2001-05) was a major player in the recent success of the World Cup in South Africa although he never appeared in any of the matches. Puya is an Associate Director at Arup in South Africa and head of Arup Major Projects Africa.

He explains: A major portion of Arup's input in establishing the South Africa's stadiums to world class standard, revolved around ensuring there would be no power cuts during any of the 64 scheduled games. Arup was contracted by the FIFA Local Organising Committee to perform the engineering, procurement, construction and operations management of all backup and technical power for both overlay and broadcasting needs. The key to achieving this was consultation at a national level with Eskom (South Africa's Power Utility), the local utilities, host cities and international firms dealing with temporary and event power.

Arup also provided, on behalf of FIFA and the Department of Energy, audits of the existing power supply systems at every stadium to determine the requirements of each individual venue, and advice on appropriate measures required to mitigate risks and ensure adherence to FIFA standard requirements for quality power supply.

"Arup had over 30 people involved in this project, with one senior engineer and one supervisor at every stadium ensuring work was carried out with quality and on time. During the events Arup was in charge of all power related matters. If anything went wrong with power, the Arup lead engineer at the stadium was contacted. He would then liaise with the stadium engineers, electrical contractors and Eskom to ensure the problem was resolved.

"It was a mammoth task: We had between three to four matches to manage every day for over two weeks across the whole country, with intense operations both before and after the match. The lights had to be on four and a half hours before the match started, and all systems needed to be checked. After the match the lights remained on for a further two hours. Then after Match Day we had de-brief meetings and reports to FIFA, repair and maintenance of power units and re-fuelling of generators to deal with."</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>A former Mitchells & Butlers' Executive Director has swapped the boardroom for the classroom as he takes on a new role at Birmingham City University's Business School.

Professor Chris Edger (PhD 2003-08), the former Group HR, Service and Productivity director for the casual dining restaurant company (with 2,000 outlets and 22 brands including Browns, All Bar One, Vintage Inns, Harvester, Toby, Miller and Carter, Ember Inns and Sizzling Pub Company) has joined Birmingham City Business School (BCBS) as Professor of Multi-Unit Leadership and will be attached to the University's Centre for Leadership and Management. He is the first of two 'Professors of Practice' who will help develop and shape BCBS as a leading practice-based business school.

Professor Edger has been working with BCBS since 2008 as a Visiting Professor, during which time he helped pioneer a Postgraduate Diploma in Multi-Unit Leadership for some of M&B's 136 multi-unit leaders and a Certificate in Management Studies for some of the company's 2,000 Unit Managers.

Chris previously held Executive Director positions in retail operations, sales, acquisitions and purchasing with Bass Leisure Entertainments (Hollywood Bowl), Bass Brewers (Carling, Grolsch and Worthingtons) and Coors. He has a PhD (Warwick Business School), MSc (LSE), a DMS and MBA (NBS) and is a fellow of the CIPD. Chris has lectured on the Warwick MBA and Masters in Management since 2006.

On joining BCBS Chris said: "It is a great honour to be joining BCBS as the first Professor of Multi-Unit Leadership in the UK. There is enormous scope to develop and market courses that improve managerial capability (at unit, area and regional level) across the retail, hospitality and service sectors in the UK. Also there is also immense research potential as the psychology, sociology and economics of Multi-Unit leadership is under-researched and not well understood. "Combining both my corporate experience of Multi-Unit Leadership and my academic background, I will relish
teaching and researching this area of management practice."</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Students from Moat House and Henley Green Primary Schools took part in a 'graduation' held at Grace Academy. Professor Mumby-Croft, Director of the Enterprise Hub acted as the 'Chancellor' and handed out scrolls of recognition to all participating students.

The Professor Fluffy project is designed to inform primary school children about the education options available to them and to help with decisions about their future. Some children have already closed down their options in relations to Higher Education by the time they have reached secondary school.

Students from Grace Academy, Coventry and from Warwick University have been acting as mentors, running workshops and hosting visits to the University campus.

Angie Pagett, Deputy Head of Henley Green Primary School commented, "The Henley Green children have been thoroughly engaged in the Professor Fluffy project. They particularly enjoyed their visit to Warwick University. Before the visit, they didn't really have an understanding of what University was like, afterwards many of the children were talking about wanting to go to university and how exciting that would be, even talking about the courses that they would like to do. They understand what this means for them at secondary school and meeting with Grace Academy pupils put this into context for them. A well thought out and accessible project which has led to our pupils becoming more aspirational about their futures."</itunes:summary>

I have met many interesting people, all from very different backgrounds and having varying business experiences. This has in itself provided a great opportunity to learn, as we discuss and share our experiences and how different people and business types operate."

<itunes:summary>Laurence Huntley (MSc Management & Business Studies 1973-74) has been elected as General Manager of Mimio, a provider of learning technologies, effective from June 1st 2010.

In 2006, Mimio became part of Newell Rubbermaid, a respected global business leader. Along with sister companies CardScan, DYMO, and Endicia, Mimio is part of the division of Newell Rubbermaid that has brought innovative, technology-based tools to education and business environments. Headquartered in Cambridge, MA, Mimio sells and distributes its products in over 45 countries.

With more than 25 years of experience as a senior executive in marketing, sales and management for international companies in the software, IT and telecommunications industries, Huntley will steer the company in its efforts to bolster global market share through its family of easy-to-use teaching tools.

"Laurence is both a visionary and a pragmatist, and those traits coupled with his strong leadership qualities have enabled him to guide and grow many successful companies," said David Klatt, President, Technology Brands Global Business Unit at Newell Rubbermaid. "We feel certain that his stewardship will further strengthen the Mimio brand and enable the company to continue its rapid growth throughout the world."

Huntley, who comes to Mimio after serving as interim Chief Marketing Officer for Promethean, had previously worked in senior-level marketing and operations positions at Cable & Wireless, Equant, British Telecom and Krone. He has also owned and operated his own management consulting business for companies in the U.S. and Europe.
Early in his career, Huntley served for a year as a volunteer teacher in the African nation of Ghana, part of the British Council Voluntary Service Overseas Program. That experience brought him a unique perspective on education and classroom instruction, particularly useful for leading the Mimio organization.

"My year in Ghana and recent experience at Promethean taught me that if you give students the right opportunities and the right tools, they will amaze you with what they can achieve," said Huntley. "That is why I am so excited to be leading Mimio. Our technology enables educators to engage with students more creatively and effectively, with advanced teaching tools that open up an entirely new world of learning."

In addition to his Warwick MBA, Huntley is a Sloan Fellow of the London Business School and holds a Bachelor of Arts, with honours, from the University of London.</itunes:summary>

In his book published in May Star Spangled Soccer: The Selling, Marketing and Management of Soccer in the USA, Gary charts America's 25 year journey to becoming a soccer nation, the key business decisions, personalities and events that shaped its growth from what he sees as that key point. He says: 'The granting of the 1994 World Cup to the United States set in motion a chain of events that has redefined soccer in America forever, good and bad, up and down but ultimately positioned to become a major force in the rapidly changing American Sports landscape.'</itunes:summary>

'The first is a franchised office of international home care provider iHome Instead Senior Care'. I launched this business in York just over 12 months ago and have really enjoyed the complete change it has offered compared to the corporate world. I am really involved with the local community, learning what clients need and want to help them to continue to live at home as independently as possible.

'I also set up a second business in the last 12 months - 'The Cooking Rooms'.
This is a cookery school based in York where we offer a variety of classes for all ages and abilities. We also specialise in providing cookery activities to groups and parties. Corporate cookery days have been very popular and teams have come from all over the country to spend a day learning how to cook together. This experience puts the team in a completely different context and allows them to learn to co-operate in an environment where nobody's role is predetermined.

'If any WBS alumni would like to book their team in for a day at The Cooking Rooms they should contact me via the web site.'</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Warwick Business School has risen nine places in the Financial Times ranking of custom programme providers. WBS is now 45th in the World and 5th in the UK. This news follows on from a ten place rise last year.

Dr Jan Stiles, Director of Executive Education said, 'We are delighted with the results of the latest FT Rankings and the recognition of WBS Executive Education as one of the top 5 leading providers of customised executive programmes in the UK. In addition to the strong relationships we build with our clients we believe our highly tailored and solution-based approach aimed at achieving real added value has been a key factor in contributing to our move up the rankings once again this year.'</itunes:summary>
