Although 'wisdom' might be considered by some to be a rather quaint concept in a post-industrialised, instrumental, and secular world, this paper argues that it deserves serious reconsideration. The paper proposes, speculatively, that the concept of wisdom be reintroduced into educational and developmental programmes, especially those designed for individuals occupying positions of organizational responsibility. Mindful of the potential naiveté of transplanting systems of thinking from one epoch to another, the paper examines the relevance of premodern thought to the post-modern condition. Drawing on radical reinterpretations of classical Greek texts by two French scholars, Pierre Hadot and Francois Jullien, the meaning of philosophy and wisdom in the ancient world are explored. The possibility of employing concepts of wisdom, virtue, and enacted ethics deriving from this reinterpretation to the contemporary workplace are then considered. It is argued that Stoical conceptions of wisdom can inform development of more enlightened ways of leading and managing.
