Profession Fest

Co-organizers: Crawford Spence, Warwick; Chris Carter, Edinburgh; Daniel Muzio, Newcastle

The purpose of the event is to bring together scholars of a broadly sociological persuasion researching different professional jurisdictions and occupations. The event will consist of 6 plenary sessions and will leave ample room for discussion and interaction.

Programme
A more detailed timetable will be released nearer the time, but the day should run from 9-5, interspersed with coffee breaks and a carvery lunch at the Scarman conference venue on the university campus. The Dean of WBS, Mark Taylor, has generously funded a conference dinner which will take place on the evening of Thursday 30 April at 8.30pm in the Le Gusta restaurant on campus.

Registration
In keeping with the interactive nature of previous events, numbers will be limited to 60 and registration will be on a first come first served basis. The cost of the event is £90 and registration can be made by following the "BOOK THIS EVENT" link.

Please be sure to specify whether or not you plan to come to the dinner the night before as we will need this information for catering purposes.

Andy Sturdy, Professor of Management, University of Bristol. Andy’s work looks primarily at issues of power and identity within Management Consulting firms. He has a forthcoming book which locates consultancy in relation to management.

Tim Morris, Professor Management Studies, University of Oxford. Tim is a leading international expert on Professional Service Firms and his research explores a range of issues therein, including leadership, career development and innovation.

Yuval Millo, Professor of Social Studies of Finance and Management Accounting, University of Leicester. Yuval’s work has been seminal in opening up a new branch of sociology specifically devoted to understanding the work of financial intermediaries and investment professionals.

Stephen Walker, Professor of Accounting, University of Edinburgh. Stephen is one of the world’s foremost historians of the accounting profession. He has looked at the birth of the accounting profession in various countries and, importantly for the ‘Fest’, has explored how the interactions between accountants and lawyers have been crucial for the developmental trajectories of each professional group.

Ruth MacDonald, Professor of Public Management, University of Manchester. Ruth’s work has been concentrated primarily on the National Health Service where she has looked at the introduction of performance measurement systems and new management practices. She has also looked extensively at changing logics in the UK Medical Profession. Her work is well published in a range of top medical and sociology of health journals.

Ian Kirkpatrick, Professor of Work and Organization, University of Leeds. Ian’s research interests broadly coalesce around notions of work and professionalism. His work sits at the interstices of sociology and management and he has published important work in both areas. Current research looks at both the restructuring of professional services and organizational change within Professional Service Firms.
