Joel Hanley, Editorial Director, Oil Markets & Development

Joel Hanley is Platts’ Editorial Director, Oil Markets & Development and has been involved in the energy market since 1998. In his current position, Joel is responsible for the training and development of the global oil team, as well as developing the industry’s understanding of Platts’ role and methodology. Joel joined Platts in 2002, reporting on the crude oil markets of the North Sea, West Africa, Russia and the Middle East, and became managing editor of the desk in 2006, with responsibilities including the Dated Brent benchmark. Joel was integral to the overhauls to Dated Brent in 2007 and 2011, and was responsible for further refinements to methodology in both crude and fuel oil specifications. Prior to his work at Platts, Joel wrote for Energy Risk magazine where he covered risk management and energy market deregulation.

Al Escher, Schlumberger Business Consulting (SBC), Director EMEA

Al was appointed SBC Europe, Middle East, and Africa Director in 2014. Prior to that he was Director for North and South America.
He has overseen the growth of SBC in the Western hemisphere, while serving clients primarily in strategy, organization and with acquisitions. Al’s early career spanned roles in engineering, management consulting, line management and governance. He began his career with Texaco, working in field operations, field development planning, well testing and reservoir simulation.
He has been an officer at companies including Booz-Allen & Hamilton and ABS Group. Al has also served on the boards of three technology companies and lectured on business strategy and entrepreneurship at various USA Universities.
Al regularly develops insights into business and technology strategy for oil companies, seen in publications such as the Petroleum Economist and Oil & Gas Journal.
