Global Energy Dilemmas: UK Energy Challenges

This workshop takes place a matter of weeks before the world’s attention turns to the global climate change negotiations in Paris. It is hoped that a global agreement can be reached to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to constrain global warming this century to 2oC. The energy system is the single greatest source of GHG emissions and the secure and affordable supply of energy services is essential to economic prosperity.

The workshop will provide an essential guide to the role of the energy system and the challenges that it faces in the forthcoming global climate change summit. It will also provide a critical assessment of the UK’s energy strategy and the implications for businesses.

The morning is divided into 4 short lectures and discussions that combine to explore the complex interrelationship between energy security, economic globalisation and climate change.

  • An Energy Primer
  • Global Energy Dilemmas
  • Energy Futures and the Trilemma: energy security, sustainability and affordability
  • The Global Energy Paradox and geopolitical consequences

After lunch, the afternoon session turns to the UK context and the first of two sessions consider the wider context of energy, economy and environment in the UK; while the second, and final, session addresses the specific issue of the shale gas debate.

  • The UK’s Energy Trilemma
  • The Contours of the Shale Gas Debate
