Excellent students
25 March 2010
Several successes for WBS students have taken place over the past month, ranging from awards for excellent coursework to success in competitions.
PRIZES . . .
The Association of Corporate Treasurers (ACT) awarded prizes to two students for the best performance in undergraduate Finance modules. Axel Stelk, from Germany, won the prize for 'Finance 1: Financial Markets' and Namnuang Eamcharoenying, from Thailand, won the prize for 'Finance 2: Corporate Finance'. Both are currently in their final year studying for BSc Accounting & Finance.
James Lockyer, Director of Education at The Association of Corporate Treasurers, presented the prizes after giving a guest lecture. WBS course leader Dr Chendi Zhang said, "We are very grateful to the ACT for their generous prizes for our students. The ACT works to support and represent professionals working in the areas of treasury, risk and corporate finance. These are areas where many of our students are hoping to make their careers."
Professor Paul Edwards, Associate Dean of the WBS Undergraduate Programme, and other faculty members were also present at the prize-giving and guest lecture.
The Lanner Group, providers of advanced simulation technology, awarded prizes to four Masters students on the MSc Management Science & Operational Research (MSOR) and MSc Business Analytics & Consulting (MSBAC) courses at a special guest lecture earlier this month.
From left to right the winners were Jenny Pham (UK), Angel Wong (Hong Kong), May Xie (China), and Yim Ying Yau (China). They won their prize for Best Consulting Project for the Analytic Consulting module, a core module for both the MSOR and MSBAC. The prize was presented by Geoff Hook from the Lanner Group, and a key member of the MSOR/MSBAC Course Advisory Board.
AWARDS . . .
The annual IBM Student Recognition Awards take place at selected universities across the UK. Faculty are invited to nominate students based on their excellent academic achievements. The Warwick event, hosted by Warwick Arts Centre, involved 16 students, including four from WBS - Alexandre Donzel (2nd yr BSc Computer Science & Business Studies), Robert Nickerson (MSc Management Science & Operational Research), Christian Kurtenbach (MSc Business Analytics & Consulting), and Terence Manuel (MSc Information Systems & Management). Other departments represented by students were Computer Science, Engineering, and Mathematics.
MSBAC student Christian Kurtenbach was given the honour of being selected as the top student from Warwick to go forward (with 7 other top students from other leading UK Universities ) to the IBM EMEA Best Student Recognition Event, which is held annually in Europe at the beginning of July. Around 70 top students from all over Europe, Russia, and South Africa attend this expenses-paid 3-day event.
Christian commented, ""I was surprised and glad to be nominated for such a great event! The people from IBM that I met were very sympathetic and interested. They certainly managed to whet my appetite to learn more about the company. Now I'm looking forward to three great days in July!"
COMPETITIONS . . .
Staying with IBM, their annual Universities Business Challenge is one of the largest undergraduate student competitions in the world. The team members from WBS for this year's entry were: Valentyn Makarenko - BSc Management, Igor Gorbatsevich - BSc Accounting & Finance; Nikolay Kuznetsov - BSc Management, Davids Taurins - BSc Accounting & Finance, and Vivien James Watts - BSc Accounting & Finance. The team was selected for the UK Semi-finals which took place at the beginning of March.
Afterwards, Igor reported to the WBS Undergraduate office, "Overall we had a really great day, unfortunately we returned extremely frustrated having come in second place; a whisker away from reaching the national finals! .... As a team we would like to thank you for initially having faith in us, and strongly urge you to promote the event to future students, as it is a great experience and a true application of the knowledge we gain from WBS modules."
Another popular student competition is Citizen Act, a socially responsible international business game sponsored by corporate and investment French bank Société Générale. A team from Warwick participated, members were Nidhi Badaya (2nd year BSc Management) and Shajitha Darshini (2nd year BSc Accounting & Finance), together with fellow student Janani Natarajan.
Out of 181 participating teams, they reached the final 55 teams and were one of only two UK teams to get this far. Their team Warwick Visionaries, aimed through their project to provide 'The Missing Link' between cultures and countries - by providing video- and teleconferencing as practical steps to enable school children from different countries to interact, communicate and learn about each other. Their progress and successes can be viewed on their competition blogsite here.
