Guest speakers shine the light on careers in finance

21 July 2010

During this Summer Term, the programme team who look after Warwick Business School's three Finance Masters programmes brought together a series of nine speakers from the world of finance during a week of guest presentations at WBS.

The speakers represented a wide range of financial work, careers and services, and included these institutions:

Bloomberg www.bloomberg.com
CFA www.cfauk.org
D Square Trading www.dsquaretrading.com/
European Islamic Investment Bank plc www.eiib.co.uk
GHC Capital Markets www.ghcl.co.uk
Market Matters www.marketmatters.co.uk
nag (Numerical Algorithms Group) www.nag.co.uk
Old Mutual Asset Management www.oldmutualfunds.co.uk
PricewaterhouseCoopers www.pwc.co.uk

Several of the speakers are Warwick alumni:
  • John Clarke, Chief Investment Officer at GHC Capital Markets and a Fellow of the Securities and Investment Institute,
  • Wael Eid, Associate Director - Risk Management of the European Islamic Investment Bank,
  • Neil Sutton, Leader of Corporate Finance in the UK for PricewaterhouseCoopers,
  • Steve Wellard, Director of Marketing and Communications at CFA Institute EMEA.

Cecelia Russell, Programme Manager for the Finance Masters, commented, "Our Finance Masters are intensive and demanding study courses, and students do not have a lot of spare time to do their own research, so the fact that so many speakers came to us from a wide range of careers and institutions was very pleasing. This is a new initiative aimed at bringing to campus a collection of experts and high-flyers who can communicate directly with our students and give them a chance to learn more about the various aspects of working in finance."

Eric So is currently completing his MSc in Finance, having already graduated with a BSc in Accounting & Finance from WBS. He gave this reaction to the week's programme of speakers, "I attended several presentations given by external speakers and found them very useful in that they provided some valuable insight into the everyday reality of a career in finance. Being able to talk to them personally after the presentation was also an excellent opportunity for networking. It was inspirational to see so many of Warwick's graduates holding influential positions in the UK financial industry. I think this new initiative is a really good idea and should definitely continue next year."
