Fifth annual 'Woxbridge' doctoral conference a big success

21 April 2011

The annual 'Woxbridge' doctoral conference is hosted in turn by doctoral students of the business schools of Warwick, Oxford and Cambridge Universities.

Students, faculty and staff at WBS were delighted to host the fifth two-day Spring Doctoral Conference with students from Saïd and Judge Business Schools.

The 'Woxbridge' Conference provides an excellent platform for doctoral students as academics in training to present their research in a supportive and constructive setting. Papers and posters were reviewed by student peers as well as academic discussants, allowing for feedback as well as developing valuable presentation skills experience.

The variety of students' papers and posters shows the breadth of interesting research being undertaken at the three business schools.

Three awards were made to the best papers from each of the three business schools. Winners this year were:

  • Kirill Zadadov and Henri Buchsteiner, Judge Business School, Cambridge, Bubbles and Crises in Open Economies
  • Tim Hannigan, Saïd Business School, Oxford, Innovation Rumour Communities: What Are the Implications of Online Rumours for the Firm's Innovation Process?
  • Miriam Marra, WBS, Warwick, Liquidity Commonality Across Equity and Credit Markets.

Next year Saïd Business School will host the 6th Annual Spring Doctoral Conference.

Gareth Owen is a part-time doctoral student who works at the University of Warwick. He sent a note of thanks to the staff at WBS who helped organise the event. "Just a short note to say thank you for all the hard work in organising the conference. It went really smoothly and everyone seemed to have a great time. I personally got a lot from the experience and will be waiting eagerly to be involved in next year's conference!"

Professor Jacky Swan is Associate Dean for the WBS Doctoral Programme. She congratulated the prize winners and all presenters at the close of the conference, and commented, "You are future academic colleagues who will be meeting again and again in the years to come as your careers progress."
