Moving towards a low carbon society?

4 August 2009

A major conference on the technological, economic, social and political challenges of moving to a low carbon society was held last month at Scarman House on campus.

Titled Challenges in the Transition to a Low Carbon Society, the conference was put together by members of the Low Carbon Society Initiative. This initiative is a cross-University group of academics, and reflects the growing policy and research funding focus in the subject of climate change.

While much of the research on climate change has so far centred on understanding its physical impact, there has been much less emphasis on understanding the broader implications of moving to a low-carbon society. The key issues in this area revolve around the development and deployment of new technology, the establishment of national and international political frameworks, the use of economic instruments, and behavioural change.

Several members of WBS faculty took part in the conference, including Andrew Sentance, Simon Collinson, Stephen Roper, Paul Stoneman and Qing Wang.

Details of the conference, including topics covered, speakers, and their presentations, can be found here.
