WBS pays tribute to Steve Jobs 1955-2011
12 October 2011
Did you know Steve Jobs was adopted? Born to unmarried birth parents, his original planned adoptive parents turned him down when he wasn't a girl. His birth parents nearly blocked Mr & Mrs Jobs adopting him because they hadn't been to college. But precisely because Mr & Mrs Jobs hadn't been to college they understood the power of an education.
Where you end up is a product of where you've been, but your past doesn't have to taint your future. Opportunity should be open to all, and Mr & Mrs Jobs sent Steve off to college to take the opportunity they hadn't been able to take.
Education is sadly too often prescriptive and turgid, stifling free thought and innovation. Steve felt he needed to learn in a more creative and critical way; so he 'dropped out' of his course, but also 'dropped in' to all sorts of other courses at his college.
Steve learned about calligraphy and typefaces, about beauty in design. He decided everything could be elegantly designed. And from that one thought, gained from a freeform education, he quite literally changed the world of both the consumer and business.
Steve Jobs: WBS salutes your creative spirit; your passion for business; your rigorous pursuit of excellence; and your legacy of a far more beautifully designed world.
