Wharton and Warwick: undergraduate exchange agreed

Two of the world's best business schools, Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania in the USA and Warwick Business School (WBS) at the University of Warwick, have signed an agreement to exchange a small number of each other's undergraduate students for a year.

Senior faculty from Wharton first visited the Warwick campus last year to discuss the establishment of an undergraduate exchange programme. They liked what they saw, and now an initial draft agreement has been confirmed by both schools.

"We are delighted that Wharton contacted us" said Professor Mike Terry, Associate Dean of the Undergraduate Programme at WBS. "The exchange will enhance the standing of both schools and should lead to other fruitful developments."

Professor Thomas W Dunfee, Vice Dean and Director of the Wharton Undergraduate Division, said "We look forward to a long and constructive relationship. We are very impressed with the quality and variety of Warwick's undergraduate business offerings which complement our courses in a number of key areas."

The first two students from WBS on the exchange programme are in their first year of studying for a BSc in Management Sciences, and will leave in September for their year at Wharton. They are Ravi Monteiro, 18, from Cheshire, and Daniel Jones, 21, from Lancaster. Both had to apply for a place on this exchange programme, and then go through a follow-up interview.

Ravi gave this reaction on learning his application to attend Wharton had been successful, "I was absolutely delighted when I found out I had been accepted for the exchange, as I really did have my heart set on it. I knew that it had been very competitive and many people had applied for the two places, so knowing that I got one of them was unbelievable." He continued "I chose WBS primarily for its reputation as the UK's leading business school. Studying in the USA has always appealed to me, and when I found out that WBS could offer this in the second year, it was the deciding factor that made me choose Warwick. If I make the most of this experience, I am sure I will have one of the most memorable years of my life."

Daniel was equally enthusiastic, "I couldn't believe it, a dream come true! Wharton has a wonderful academic programme that attracts the best calibre of student with a first-class work ethic. The thought of being surrounded by this kind of talent is very stimulating. I am very passionate about business and I want the best business education." He continued "I am looking forward to working with Wharton students, learning from them and enjoying the kind of collaboration that a career in business involves. I also think the exchange will teach me a valuable lesson in independence and self-sufficiency being so far away from home."
