Honorary Degree for Former Head of WBS

Professor Sir George Bain was awarded the honorary degree of LLD in the Summer Degree Ceremonies at Warwick this month.

George Bain worked at WBS when it was still named the School of Industrial and Business Studies. In 1970 he joined Hugh Clegg at Warwick to take up the post of Deputy Director of the internationally-recognised Industrial Relations Research Unit. In 1974 he took over as its Director and served in that role until 1981.

He accepted the post of Chair of the School in 1983. It was in this role that he transformed it into the leading international business school it is today, developing its organisation into the form that is still familiar today, and changing its name to Warwick Business School. In 1989 he left WBS to become Head of London Business School.

In 1998 he became President and Vice-Chancellor of Queen's University Belfast, and recently chaired an Independent Review of the Fire Service. He was knighted for services to higher education and the Low Pay Commission in 2001.
