Major Award for Warwick Professor

Professor Alyson Warhurst of Warwick Business School is to be awarded the first European Faculty Pioneer Award by the European Academy of Business in Society (EABIS) as part of a global initiative Beyond Grey Pinstripes and in conjunction with the US-based Aspen Institute and the World Resources Institute.

The Award will be presented at the 2nd colloquium of EABIS taking place in Copenhagen, Denmark on 19 - 20 September this year. Keynote speakers Professor Michael Porter of Harvard Business School, Professor Peter Pruzan of Copenhagen Business School, John Elkington, Director and co-founder of SustainAbility, and Lise Kingo, Executive Vice-President, Stakeholder Relations, Novo Nordisk will be amongst those present when Professor Warhurst receives the award.

"I am delighted by this award" says Professor Warhurst "I have been working for the last 20 years against the current, never sure if overall I was making headway. The Award provides an opportunity for reflection and perhaps the two things that please me most about it are: first, the recognition of my contribution as a development professional - my research and teaching has mainly been about the roles and responsibilities of business in developing countries; second, the fact that as a young mother with three small children, I've managed to have an impact and have something to show them to explain my absence from rugby and cricket matches over the last few years! I believe in multi-disciplinary knowledge creation and all my research and teaching is about crossing boundaries and working in teams to create sea changes in the way companies work. As a social scientist I feel social impacts should be managed proficiently by companies in the same way as engineering work is carried out - with integrity, with accuracy, by professionals and built to last. I am an outspoken critic of companies who do not see corporate citizenship as work in progress, and here to stay, and who consider it a 'nice to have' extra! So I am particularly delighted that a business panel selected me over all my other European peers."

Judith F. Samuelson, Executive Director, Business and Society Program at the Aspen Institute commented, "Beyond Grey Pinstripes faculty pioneers demonstrate exceptional accomplishments. They are truly leading the way in integrating social and environmental concerns into the management education courses that will shape the skills and perspectives of the next generation of business leaders. Additionally, through their research and work with business students and industry, these faculty are having an impact far beyond their business schools; they are changing business practice."

In addition to the above award, and through her role as Adviser to the Logistics and Transportation Sector's Corporate Citizenship Initiative, Professor Warhurst has scored another 'hit' in being invited as a member of the World Economic Forum to be a faculty member for the regional summits and the Annual Meeting in Davos. These take place once a year and involve world leaders across business, government, academia and civil society.
