The First UK DLitt Award in Marketing
Nigel F Piercy, Professor in Marketing at Warwick Business School, has been awarded a higher doctorate - Doctor of Letters (DLitt). This is the highest earned degree awarded by universities in the UK, and represents a minimum of ten years' outstanding research after the award of the PhD.
While higher doctorates are well-recognised in science and engineering, they are relatively unusual in the social sciences. In the business school arena, this is thought to be the first time that a higher doctorate by research thesis has been awarded in the marketing discipline. It is also the first occasion on which a member of WBS faculty has obtained a higher doctorate while on the staff.
Nigel said "I am incredibly pleased to have obtained this degree, obviously from a personal perspective, but also because the award underlines the growing maturity of marketing as an academic discipline with a solid research foundation."
The DLitt award has been made by Edinburgh Business School and the School of Management at Heriot-Watt University, where Nigel completed his undergraduate degree. The award ceremony takes place at a Degree Congregation in Edinburgh on November 29.
The thesis submitted for the degree was entitled The Implementation of Market Strategy: The Analysis of Structure, Information and Process, and consisted of a portfolio of published works and a statement of the rationale for the collected work. The thesis had to meet the criteria that the work represents a substantial contribution to learning and establishes the candidate as an authority in his field.
