Top Business School Students Awarded Marketing Prizes

Two top graduates from Warwick Business School (WBS) at the University of Warwick have been awarded prizes for their excellent work on marketing during their final year of study. Emma Birch, aged 21, from St Austell in Cornwall, and Lisa Davies, 22, from Pontypridd in Wales, have just graduated with a BSc in Management.

Each winner received a cheque for £250 and a bottle of champagne to celebrate their success.

Emma won the Fujitsu Best Marketing Student Award, sponsored by Fujitsu Services, part of the third-largest IT services company in the world. Their Commercial Marketing Director, Ian Hunter, who organised the sponsorship this year, coincidentally started his business career with a BSc in Management Sciences from WBS in 1982.

Emma said "When I first heard I had won this Marketing Award I was delighted and very excited. I feel honoured to receive such a high accolade from the sponsors and Warwick Business School.

Emma is shortly starting work in London for Deutsche Bank, one of the world's leading financial service providers. She added "I am going to buy my first suit for work with my prize money, as jeans and T-shirts are not suitable for my new job in the City!"

Lisa won the Star Chamber Award for the best student in Marketing Communications, given by the Chief Executive of The Star Chamber John Wringe, who regularly delivers lectures to students at WBS.

Lisa said "I was shocked when I first heard I'd won this prize, but then happy because it was one of my favourite modules, and I had enjoyed the subject and put a lot of effort into the assignment groupwork. The bigger groups were also a great way to meet people, and a number of them became and remain great friends.

Lisa continued "This prize will contribute to my CV, as well as help me in my next job. I am starting work in September on the NHS Leadership and Management Graduate Scheme. I believe marketing and an understanding of the Mar-comms (Marketing & Communications) tools is still very fundamental, especially with the amount of press coverage. Some of the tools used also gave me an added understanding of how to gain positive synergy by maintaining an integrated approach. I definitely believe studying marketing will positively benefit my future career, as all businesses require an element of marketing as they come under more public scrutiny."

This is the third year Fujitsu Services and John Wringe have sponsored marketing prizes for students at WBS.

Dr Lyndon Simkin, who teaches on the course, said "WBS thanks the prize sponsors of these awards, their recognition of the excellent work carried out by Emma and Lisa is proof of the top quality of our students.
These generous awards will help and benefit them, and give them something good to add to their CVs."
