WBS research to benefit Coventry

Warwick Business School's Associate Professor of Operational Research, Dr Vladimir Deineko, has been awarded funding of £200,000 by the EPSRC (the government-funded Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council) for a 2-year project to study how Coventry City Council can make the best possible use of their service vehicles.

For the past few years, Coventry City Council, the WBS Operational Research & Management Sciences Group and its Masters degree programme have developed a two-way relationship to the benefit of all concerned. The City Council have been able to provide challenging and near-at-hand student projects over the summer months for Masters students, and benefit on the conclusion of these projects by applying the students' findings and recommendations.

Vladimir's successful application for funding is a further step in this relationship. He explains, "This research project, called Special Structures in Vehicle Routing Problems will look at optimising how Coventry Council City Council use their fleet of vehicles for purposes such as waste collection, repair services, and passenger transport. As a trained mathematician, I will be overseeing research which has a wider base than logistics alone, and hope to enable the Council to provide a better service for less cost and less wear and tear on vehicles and staff."

Tariq Ditta, Head of Performance and Support Services, City Services Directorate stated, "The City Council welcomes this further opportunity to work with the University of Warwick Business School in this important subject area. The Council strongly supports this project as it will help in two key areas. First improving value-for-money by minimising expenditure on fuel especially given the continued escalating fuel costs that are affecting all road users. The second area is to reduce the environmental impact of vehicles in a positive and meaningful way, in line with the Council's Climate Change Strategy."
