WBS Sees Recruitment Figures Rise

For the full-time MBA, we saw an increase in applications of 22% from last year. Generally most business schools are seeing an increase in applications, in part due to the economic downturn, but no doubt our #29 in the world ranking has helped us this year. Our class is more international than before, with 27 different nationalities, an average age of 31 and we have maintained our high % of female candidates at 32%.

For the distance learning (DL) MBA this year, we have seen an application increase of 27%. It might be of interest however, to know that we are seeing a decrease in the number of DL students who are being fully or partially sponsored by their employer (from 38% in 2004 to 25% in 2008 to date). This long-term trend isn't just a short-term response to the credit crunch; indeed, we are seeing some of our highest levels of company sponsorship on our Executive MBA, so we're not seeing the current economic climate impacting on part-time MBAs - yet.

For people who can't get sponsorship from their organisation - or who perhaps don't want to ask for it - the distance learning MBA is the most affordable route. This is especially true for UK candidates. The UK market for our distance learning MBA had been falling in 2005-7, but has leapt back up in 2008 with an increase of 40% in just one year. We know that the third in the world ranking by the Economist Intelligence Unit has helped this, but at the end of the day, the DL MBA gives participants the affordable and flexible programme that they need without compromising on quality.
