WBS research with practical implications receives international recognition
Two WBS academics, Sotirios Paroutis and Duncan Angwin, both of the Marketing & Strategic Management Group, have won the Best Paper for Practice Implications Award at the annual international Strategic Management Society (SMS) conference, held this year in Cologne, Germany. The primary criterion for this prize is practitioner relevance.
Their paper The Roles of Strategy Directors and Strategy Teams in Large Firms, provides a unique insight into the roles that strategy directors play in large UK firms. It also offers a number of recommendations for executives, consultants and management educators working with such directors.
The SMS conference is the top strategy conference globally, normally receiving more than 700 submissions each year. This is the first time that UK scholars have won the top award at the SMS conferences. Sotirios and Duncan were presented with their certificates during the awards luncheon by the president of the board of SMS, Professor Michael Hitt.
The publishers who co-sponsored the prize, Wiley Blackwell, are in talks with the authors about a book, and there are currently two spin off articles under review with a third in the pipeline.
Duncan commented, "We would like to thank the WBS Research Development Fund for the seed corn finance for the field work which made this possible, and we look forward to further dissemination of our research and ideas."
Sotirios commented, "I am delighted that our study has received such global recognition. Demonstrating the practical impact of academic work has become an increasingly challenging task. It's great that WBS is, once more, recognised as being at the forefront of such research efforts."
