Dads Beat Beckham

A recent report for E-On finds that kids follow the team that their Dad supported rather than following a team because of its high profile stars. Sue Bridgewater comments.

""The role of family as an influence on fans supporting a particular team also emerges strongly from my own research into football fans and their motivations. Often a fan refers to a particular match or memory of attending a game with their father, mother, brothers and sisters or grandparents. The family ethos of football is reinforced by developments such as all-seater stadia, family enclosures, better catering and other facilities as well as incentive schemes to attract younger football fans to attend matches.

"My Dad played an important role in my becoming a Sunderland fan and, even though I no longer live in the North East, I started taking my own children to matches when they were still toddlers. I'm pleased to say that they are Sunderland fans too!"
