Five WBS undergraduates win UBS-sponsored prizes
Five second-year WBS undergraduates have won prizes for their outstanding performances in the Financial Management module, taught by Principal Teaching Fellow, Dr Peter Corvi. The prizes were sponsored by the investment bank UBS.Kevin Lee, a BSc Accounting and Finance student from New Zealand, and Veronika Janeckova, a BSc International Business student from Slovakia, shared first prize and received £75 each in gift vouchers, whilst Ashish Rajgarhia, a BSc Management student from India, and Cheng Chen and Willi Leung, both BSc Accounting and Finance students from China, shared second and third prizes, and received £50 each in gift vouchers.
The prizes were presented at an evening event held in the Ramphal lecture theatre earlier this month, and attended by some 150 undergraduates. The prize-giving was followed by a suite of presentations on these topics:
- Investment banking, by Warwick alumni Simon McWhirter (Executive Director, Global Head, Equity Valuation Control) and Tobias Wagnert (Executive Director, Investment Banking);
- Life as a recent graduate recruit at UBS, by WBS alumna Maria Jones;
- An overview of summer placement and career opportunities with UBS by Nicole Symonds.
The evening was rounded off with a drinks reception, courtesy of UBS, at which students had an opportunity to network informally with each of the seven UBS representatives present.
Peter Corvi commented afterwards, "WBS is very grateful to UBS for sponsoring these prizes and for hosting the drinks reception, and of course to Simon, Tobias, Maria, Nicole and their colleagues Sally Springer, Dirk van der Merwe and Adrian Ridley for taking time out of their busy schedules to come to Warwick. The winners, I'm sure, will put their prize money to good use.
"Last year, UBS recruited more graduates from Warwick than from any other UK university, which speaks volumes for the high regard in which UBS holds Warwick graduates. The students who attended the event will have heard from, and been able to question, people working in different areas of UBS, and will have gained valuable insights into the world of investment banking as a result."
