Warwick Business School undergraduate student wins individual first place in The UBS Challenge
The UBS Challenge is a two-stage competition for first year students at four of UBS's key target universities - Cambridge, London School of Economics, Oxford and Warwick. This year's challenge started with 912 students for stage one, with 73 qualifying for the second and final stage.
From a total of 12 winners, five were from Warwick, including Ravneek Reena Bains, taking BSc Accounting & Finance, who won the individual first prize. Other Warwick winners were Zhuo Jun Gong, Matthew Pengilly and Chirag Bhatti of the winning team, and David Jones took individual third place.
The first part of The UBS Challenge competition was an online virtual trading game. Students with the highest scores from each university progressed to the second stage of the competition.
The second part took place at Eastnor Castle in Ledbury, Gloucestershire. Students from all four universities were divided into mixed teams and competed against each other in a series of mental and physical challenges around the castle grounds. The activities were designed around UBS's seven core competencies for graduates: teamwork, communication, making an impact, planning and organising, judgement and decision making, innovation, drive and commitment.
Lucinda Watson from UBS Campus Recruiting explained the rationale behind The UBS Challenge, "The norm in campus marketing is to target students in their penultimate year at university but we're keen to build relationships with students earlier than that. The UBS Challenge is not only great fun, but it enables us to reach students who may be suited to our two first year programs, Insights and Horizons, and ultimately a career at UBS."
Professor Paul Edwards, Associate Dean for the WBS Undergraduate Programme, commented, "These undergraduate students are talented and dedicated, and simply to qualify for this Challenge was an achievement in itself. We are proud that Ravneek won individual first place, and congratulate all the Warwick students on their efforts. I am sure they not only enjoyed participating, but also learnt valuable lessons at the start of their academic study that will be valuable to them in their future career."
