A new Football League - The Times' Financial Fair Play League

The Times' Financial Fair Play League has been created by Sue Bridgewater of WBS and Patrick Barclay, Chief Football Correspondent at the Times newspaper, and launches in The Times newspaper today.

This League attempts to take into account the resources available to football clubs in the English Premier League in achieving their points and league position. Data on clubs' wages and gross transfers are used as the basis of the Financial Fair Play index, which is used to adjust the actual league position and points totals of clubs and to show a financially-adjusted league ranking.

The Financial Fair Play League is introduced in the Times today, Friday 3 September 2010, with a review of what last season's Premier League table would look like using the Financial Fair Play Index. The first of a series of league tables for this season is also shown. The Financial Fair Play League table will be updated monthly.

More details of how this Financial Fair Play Index is calculated can be found in the PDF file here.
