Global Energy MBA completes successful workshop in China

The Warwick Global Energy MBA recently completed a successful joint workshop in Shanghai with Tongji University's School of Economics and Management. The choices that China is making regarding its supply and use of energy affect the energy industry across the world. The workshop combined WBS teaching the MBA's module on strategic advantage with lectures and visits on the themes of sustainable economic development and energy, organized by Tongji.

Energy supply was reflected in a visit to the Waigaoqiao Number 3 Power Generation Company, the world's most efficient coal fired power station. Energy consumption was reflected in visits to BaoSteel, the third largest steelmaker in the world, and to the Shanghai Urban Planning Centre.

David Elmes, Academic Director of the Global Energy MBA said, "This teaching collaboration between WBS and Tongji has proved to be very successful. Combining a look at strategy with experiencing the economic growth of China helps emphasize the global challenges and opportunities that the energy industry faces." Below are a selection of comments from the participants.

Brent Brough - Schlumberger Norge AS, Norway
The insight I received in terms of strategic decision-making and China was beyond my expectations. What pulled all of the points together was the combination of Industry visits and Academic presentations. Well worth the time and investment of the trip to Shanghai and I would endorse it fully.

Lynda Clayton - Scottish Power, UK
The China visit has been a great experience in terms of having the opportunity to learn about the Chinese culture, study at Tongji University campus and also some very insightful company visits. Our hosts at Tongji have been fantastic, and have really helped to make the visit enjoyable and interesting.

Gage Garner - Westport Power, Canada
The Warwick Global Energy MBA Strategic Advantage trip in China was both highly relevant to the content of the Strategic Advantage module and critical to a better understanding of China's future energy needs and how they intend to solve the challenge.
