WBS Logo Art Competition

G John Rees - Best in ShowEarlier this year Warwick Business School announced its 'we look at things differently' campaign which coincided with the launch of the new WBS logo. Following from this we launched the WBS logo art competition to engage with a wider audience and to emphasise our focus on creativity.

The competition brief, which received over 100 entries from professional and amateur artists, was to produce dramatic and exciting large-scale interpretations of the new logo in the style of a range of well-known artists. These paintings were judged by a panel which included Professor Mark Taylor, Dean of WBS, Sarah Shalgosky, Curator of the Mead Gallery at Warwick Arts Centre, and Stephen Bell, Creative Director of Coley Porter Bell.

The award ceremony took place at the offices of the Design Council in London, and the five winning entries each won £1000.

These were:

  • G John Rees (after Roy Lichtenstein) which was also judged to be best in show
  • Joe Rice (after Victor Vasarely)
  • Barbara Rebelo (after Andy Warhol). Barbara revealed hidden talents as an artist as she has just graduated with a First in BSc in Management at WBS.
  • Vivienne Robinson (after Charles Rennie Mackintosh)
  • Beverly Ranger (after Tracey Emin).

In announcing the winners, Professor Taylor said, "I would like to leave you with a couple of quotes which I think describe creativity and also the philosophy at WBS. Edward de Bono - 'Creativity involves breaking out of established patterns in order to look at things in a different way.' And Henri Matisse - 'Creativity takes courage.' I believe that Warwick Business School has the courage to break out of the established patterns in order to look at things differently and that this is the defining trait of our graduates."

The five winning entries can be viewed online here.
