Six WBS undergraduates win UBS-sponsored prizes
No fewer than six WBS undergraduates have won prizes for their outstanding performances in the Financial Management and Foundations of Financial Management modules. The prizes were sponsored by the investment bank UBS.
Panich Kasamepaiboon and Shalani Ravishanker shared the £200 prize for Financial Management, which is a core module for first-year BSc Accounting and Finance students. Rui Sheng Lee, Dusan Milosavljevic, Karan Shah and Ville Vartiainen shared the £200 prize for Foundations of Financial Management, which is a core module for first-year BSc Management, BSc International Management and BSc International Business students, and a very popular elective for first-year BA Law and Business Studies students.
The prizes were presented at an evening event held in the Ramphal lecture theatre on campus on Tuesday, 15 November, attended by some 230 undergraduates. The prize-giving was followed by a case-study presentation by Warwick alumnus Neil Patel (Executive Director, UBS Investment Banking) entitled 'Hostile Takeovers: Memoirs of an Investment Banker'.
The evening was rounded off with a drinks reception, courtesy of UBS, at which students had an opportunity to network informally with each of the five UBS representatives present.
Professor Peter Corvi, Associate Dean of the WBS Undergraduate Programme, commented, "WBS is extremely grateful to UBS for sponsoring these prizes and for hosting the drinks reception, and of course to Neil and his colleagues for taking time out of their very busy schedules to come to Warwick for the evening. Neil's presentation was a tour de force, walking us through each of the key events in the hostile takeover of Venture Production by Centrica, and the role of UBS as lead advisor to Venture Production."
Peter continued, "I was particularly pleased to hear Neil stress how important the discounted cash-flow techniques that we teach in our UG Finance modules are in such advisory work. Students who attended this evening's event also had an opportunity to speak to Warwick graduates who now work in different areas of UBS, and will have gained valuable insights into the world of investment banking as a result."
