Applying to our Doctoral Programme
Applying to study a PhD is unlike applying for most other courses. Before you apply, please read all the information on our web site and some of the books on our reading list.
How to apply
- Check you meet our eligibility criteria.
- Contact the most appropriate prospective supervisor(s) to discuss your proposed research.
- Write your research proposal.
- Submit your application online, mentioning your proposed supervisor, and uploading your research proposal.
- Either at the same time, or within two weeks, upload your supporting documents.
When to apply
Our Doctoral Programme begins in October. The majority of places are allocated between January and March in the year of admission. Apply by 30 June to guarantee consideration for entry in October of the same year. Later applications may sometimes be considered but we cannot guarantee that they will be processed in time.
You are strongly advised to apply to us as early as possible, particularly as funding is often dependent on securing a place by a certain date. You must apply for funding before February for entry in October the same year. Some funding programmes have a deadline significantly earlier.
Please note that as the first year of our programme contains a compulsory taught research training element, it is not usually possible to start at other times of the year.
If you are currently studying for your doctorate elsewhere and wish to come to us on a 'Visiting Student' basis, you need to follow the same procedure as any other candidate but your start date will be more flexible. You will be charged fees proportionally for each month you are here.
