Behavioural Science
Behavioural science is a new and fast-growing field - and one in which WBS is leading the whole of Europe. It is intrinsically interdisciplinary. We have recently appointed world-renowned figures like Nick Chater and Bruno Frey.
Behavioural science is the study of human behaviour in a broader way than happens in traditional courses in economics, psychology, sociology, and management. Behavioural science seeks to understand human choices and human well-being by combining, for example, mathematical theories with a wide range of carefully collected observational data. Behavioural scientists might, for instance, construct experiments in which they measure the heart rate and eye movements of consumers making decisions about what to buy. Or they might study the decisions of City traders and link those decisions back statistically to the lengths of their fingers and their testosterone levels (such research was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA). The aim of behavioural science is to understand human action in a genuinely reliable, scientific way.
