Corporate Finance
This elective is the study of financial decision-making processes in the corporation. You will explore financing decisions around capital budgeting, valuation, risk management, and what methods to use to maximise value.
Explore questions like:
- What assets should I buy?
- What projects should I invest in?
- Should I launch this product?
- Is this advertising plan an effective use of resources?
- How do I put a fair value on this division or company that I want to acquire/sell/float on the stock market?
- How do I finance this business?
- Should I borrow or sell shares?
- How does dividend policy affect the value of the company?
- Can I increase the value of the business by financial engineering?
- What risks do I want to keep and what risks do I want to pass on?
- How do I use derivatives and other financial instruments to change my risk exposure?
By the end of this module, you will:
- Be familiar with many of the terms in common use amongst financial managers, and be happy using them
- Understand how firms interact with the capital markets
- Be able to evaluate investment decisions
- Understand the trade off between risk and return as perceived by the capital markets
- Be able to value a company on a variety of different bases
- Have insight into the market for corporate control, particularly through mergers and acquisitions
- Understand how financing policy affects the value of the company
- Understand how companies manage risk.
