Human Resource Management
This module can be studied at WBS as a five-day residential module, or at Mannheim Business School, Germany (in English).
It has long been accepted that the management of people is a central task of individual managers. More recently, it is becoming increasingly recognised that the policies, processes, and procedures that are involved in the management of people in the business as a whole, and in particular the extent to which they integrate with one another and with business planning more generally, can make a significant contribution to performance.
In this module you will develop a sensitive understanding of a range of human resource management (HRM) issues, distinguishing rhetoric from reality. You will gain an awareness of the potential and the problems associated with particular approaches in particular contexts, and explore current applications of a number of concepts and techniques.
Topics usually covered include:
- HRM and business strategy
- Managing diversity
- Pay and performance
- Teamwork
- Workforce reduction and discipline
- Mergers, acquisitions and re-organisations
- Partnership and employee voice
- International integration: HRM in multi-national corporations
- High performance work systems
- Linking strategy and performance.
