PhD Programme

Entry Requirements

Competition to join our Doctoral programme is very strong; you’ll need to demonstrate you have the intellectual capabilities, stamina, drive and commitment to complete a ground-breaking piece of work through independent study.

Academic requirements for our PhD in Business & Management

  • A minimum of an upper second class honours degree from a British university, or an equivalent from an overseas university; plus a relevant Masters degree ideally with a distinction in the dissertation.

If you have a generalist Masters degree, such as an MBA, or a Masters in a subject other than the one you plan to research, you will need to demonstrate specialist academic knowledge. For example through your Masters dissertation or, in exceptional cases, prior experience.

Academic requirements for our PhD in Finance & Econometrics

Subject to approval, this course will be replaced by an MRes/PhD Finance & Economics (2+4) programme of study to better reflect the changing market. The proposed course and component modules are undergoing a full review by the University and will bring Warwick Business School’s PhD provision in Finance and Economics more in line with other providers. This has been driven by student experience as well as employer requirements.

The programme will consist of a 2 year MRes taught jointly by WBS and the Department of Economics, followed by a 4 year PhD programme. WBS intends all places to be fully funded. Updated course information will be available once the course content is approved, and no later than 15 November 2020.

  • A first-class honours degree from a UK university or equivalent from an overseas university; plus a Masters degree, normally with distinction, in economics or finance. We may also consider a Masters in accounting and finance or financial mathematics, with a significant finance component.
  • A GMAT or GRE score is required and should be provided as part of your application. However, we have no defined threshold and the score provided will be indicative to merely supplement and strengthen applications.

English language requirements
If English is not your first language, you must meet a minimum overall standard in a recognised test of English. You must show a good balance across all sections of the test and it must have been taken within two years of starting the course. We will require your certificates as evidence.
