'Talent Wars - business lessons from football management'
In recent decades trends towards globalization, interorganisational networks and flat organisational structures have changed the economic context in which business work. This, in turn, changes the nature of employer-employee relationships. Employers require endless adaptability and fluidity from talented employees whilst employees adopt a more free-market, dynamic attitude towards employment. This session draws on lessons from the football business in which Dr Susan Bridgewater has researched and run courses for football managers since 2001. The global football sector faces increased mobility of individuals (post Bosman ruling), and creating teams and maximising the performance of talented individuals are key challenges in a high profile, highly competitive, results oriented business. The session will draw lessons from football for broader management with a focus on talent management - attracting, developing and retaining talented individuals - and on achieving consistently excellent performance.

'Strategic Customer Management - new relationships & new risks'
Companies across the world are confronting the challenge of meeting escalating customer demands for superior value and enhanced, value-driven relationships with suppliers. While the strategic reinvention of operations and supply chain management has become a reality in most major organizations, the transformation of the interface with the customer ? sales, account management, customer business development ? remains in process.
Critical issues to be considered include:
- Customer pressures for new types of relationships with suppliers
- Development of the strategic sales organization
- New infrastructure for managing the interface with customers
- Strategic account management systems for major customers
- The evolving customer portfolio and the risks in dependence and loyalty.

'Effect without a cause - empiricist management & the misuse of performance measures'
The empiricist approach is rife in the practice and academic study of management, and in everyday life (e.g., the assumption of links between the MMR vaccination and autism). Journals brim with normative models derived from relationships assumed amongst empirical categories. Scientific theory is rare.
But if empiricism works what is the problem? The answer is that science explains before it manages, it sets up mental constructions we can apply in multiple contexts. Empiricism explains only if it manages.
This presentation looks at empiricism in the context of performance management. It also will present arguments to support better, and logical ways of understanding and managing our world.

'Success or Disaster - encoded in the DNA of the founding team?'
Nigel has presented his Egg to Butterfly Model on the MBA for some years now and the core characters, the Envisioner, the Enabler and the Enactor are described as the key start up capabilities or the 3Es and he argues that the truly successful start up blends these characteristics together. He explains that firms which grow, evolve and that the nature of the team skills to facilitate that growth changes, often fundamentally but that these three dimensions of the founding 'DNA' should still remain present. The leadership position should be taken by each in turn to facilitate change or when circumstances and the landscape of the business change.
Dr Martin Johnson has both experienced and applied this approach in his work and has also undertaken research with Birkbeck College (London University) exploring the 3Es and has used psychometric testing to identify whether there are measurable differences between the "Envisioner", "Enabler", and "Enactor".

Open Innovation - new ways of innovating
This presentation will show how companies need to open up their innovation processes if they are to respond to the challenges of global competition. Open innovation means moving away from an internal R&D-based approach. Instead companies need to embrace new sources of knowledge and ideas outside the firm, including a much bigger role for user groups, more use of business networks, and adopting the ruthless habits of the venture capitalist when it comes to picking winners. Moving towards open innovation may cause real ethical and political dilemmas for management, but recognizing and overcoming these dilemmas is an important step towards a genuinely competitive approach to innovation.
