BSc Management with Finance (2018 - 2021)

Tell us a bit about yourself, and the course you studied?

My name is Shubh Mehta, from Mumbai, India and I completed my schooling in the Indian Curriculum. I studied BSc Management with Finance at Warwick Business School. I joined WBS as a nervous individual, moving away from home for the first time. However, I had the best experience of my life at WBS and left as a confident business professional.

What attracted you to WBS?

The ranking of WBS definitely had a role to play in guiding me towards applying. I had secured offers from all five universities I applied to, however, WBS stood out to me in terms of rankings and student life. Before making my final decision I visited the University of Warwick campus during one of their offer holder open days where I was stunned by the sheer size and beauty of the campus. I wanted to study at a campus based university and move away from a busy city environment where I had lived throughout my life. During the offer holder open day, I had the opportunity to speak to some current students about what student life was like at Warwick which was really useful. With over 250 societies and sports clubs available on campus, along with a great social life, and state-of-the-art learning facilities these factors all played a huge role in helping me narrow down my decision in choosing WBS.

What was the best thing about your degree?

The exposure to the world of business that WBS gave me was a huge highlight of my course. This included learning from real-life case studies combined with the flexibility of the course which enabled me to discover my interests and follow my passion. The assessments were well designed giving me an enriched learning experience by not only testing my knowledge but by also allowing me to participate in group activities and presentations giving me the opportunity to challenge my understanding of the topics I have learned. At WBS critical thinking is not only respected but encouraged giving students the ability to question and reason theories.

How did you find having a personal tutor?

I have found that having a personal tutor as a first point of contact when starting university was really comforting. Not every student has a smooth transition into university life and therefore having someone to share any problems or issues with was very useful.

What sort of support did you receive from the careers team?

The CareersPlus Team at WBS were extremely helpful, providing one-to-tone mentoring sessions where I received personalised feedback and advice relating to my career aspirations. They also organised webinars, networking sessions and careers events where you have the opportunity to meet with employers.

Were you a member of any SU clubs or societies?

Societies were a very important part of my university life. Not only did they give me the best social life I could have asked for but I learned so many new life skills. I had the honour of serving as an exec in the Warwick India Forum, Warwick Indian Society, Warwick Consulting Society, and Enactus Warwick. It is through these societies I developed my team working, communications and several other soft skills which are highly important in today’s competitive job market. I stood for elections where I had the opportunity to tackle my stage fright and build my confidence. Being the Deputy Coordinator of the Warwick India Forum, helped me to improve my leadership skills as I was responsible for managing several execs who reported to me. Being part of lots of different societies has also allowed me to interact with and learn from well dignified speakers from all different kinds of sectors.

Do you feel that your degree prepared you for your next steps?

My degree has played a major role in preparing me for the world of business. Not only has it equipped me with the knowledge required for my future career goals but it has also helped me improve on my team working skills which are crucial in the business world. The theoretical knowledge which I have learned throughout my degree so far has helped me clarify where my interests and passion lie. Throughout my degree I have been encouraged to think out of the box which is something that has been extremely beneficial to me since leaving university.

What top tip would you give to prospective undergraduate students who are deciding if WBS is the right place for them?

If you are looking to have the best 3-4 years of your life while learning in an international environment, on a spectacular campus, and being taught by world renowned academics then WBS is the place for you.

What top tip would you give to a student who is about to start at WBS?

My top tip for students starting at WBS would be to have an open mind. There will be ample opportunities presented to you so make sure you make the most of them. Failure has been my constant motivating factor as things will not always go your way but you need to learn how to deal with this and overcome it so never stop trying as your hard work will pay off eventually.
