International Summer School on Practice-based Studies

The International Summer School on Practice-Based Studies is a yearly initiative aimed at the development and promotion of practice-based studies. By bringing together the leading scholars in the field, the School aims to become a primary centre for the elaboration and dissemination of this new development in the study of social, technological, and human phenomena.

The primary mission of the School is to introduce young scholars and curious minds of all ages to this new broad area of study. The School is programmatically multi-disciplinary and open to a variety of approaches and sensitivities. We envisage an event where there is enough time not only for teaching, but also for reflecting with and learning from colleagues and advanced students.  From this year the School also has a Winter session with similar aims.

The Summer School is an ‘advanced studies’ initiative aimed at participants who have some familiarity with the practice approach and are interested to further explore the topic and learn about the most recent developments in the field.

Faculty and participants will come from a variety of disciplines and areas of study, including philosophy, social theory, organizational and management studies, political science, education and technology studies.

The Summer School will be inclusive and open. The pedagogic model will be based on active participation and the idea of creating a temporary learning community. We will strive to design an event where open dialogue, discussion, and joint exploration generate learning and enrichment for all participants: teachers, students and faculty alike.

Applicants will be selected based on the demonstrable alignment of their research topic with the theme of the school and the expected benefits from attending the event. The programme will include a PhD/early research  clinic during which participants will be offered the opportunity to discuss their research in groups of 3-4 people facilitated by the faculty.

To apply, please send an abstract of no more than 800 words by 9 May 2014 to dawn.coton@wbs.ac.uk

The abstract should include three sections: topic and progress of current research/career, reasons for attending the event, what you hope to gain from attending (and contributing to) the Summer School.

The all-inclusive, subsidised fee for the 2014 edition is £700 (€840). This includes 5 nights 4-star bed and breakfast accommodation, all lunches and refreshment breaks and (one) welcome dinner.

Applicants will be notified of acceptance by 23 May 2014. Please do not try to register or send payment until you receive this notification.
