Abstract: The order fulfillment process is a source of cost, as well as potential competitive advantage to manufacturing firms. Specifically, we adopt an industry studies perspective to explore the profitability implications of building products to customer order. We integrate unit-level production, logistics, sales, and profitability data from a large automotive producer that manufactured vehicles to order as well as to forecast.
