Championing inclusion with help from the LGBTQUA+ Scholarship

05 March 2024

Global Online MBA participant and Change Maker – LGBTQUA+ scholar Michelle Cook shares how this support has enabled her to continue to drive inclusion and social change, and shares her advice for prospective applicants.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I am passionate about driving innovation in business and creating meaningful change in society, as well as the workplace. With a background in travel, events and operations, I have always been intrigued by how businesses operate, both in general and in this sector in particular. I wanted to expand my business operations and leadership knowledge and in turn help to shape the industry I am working in.  Before applying for my MBA, I worked in the travel events space for over ten years and I felt the desire to expand my knowledge and develop the skills necessary to become a leader in my field.

What does the scholarship mean to you?

The decision to apply for the Championing Diversity - LGBTQUA+ scholarship was driven by a combination of financial considerations and my strong desire to further my education. The Championing Diversity - LGBTQUA+ scholarship represents much more than just financial support. It is a recognition of my potential, hard work, and commitment to advancing in the field of business, whilst championing and being a role model for those within my community that may feel that the MBA isn't for them. It has been a tremendous confidence booster, affirming that I am on the right path. Additionally, it allows me to pursue my ambitions with greater focus, knowing that I am supported by an esteemed institution like Warwick Business School (WBS). It is an opportunity to be part of a community that values excellence, diversity, and leadership.

How have you been Championing Diversity, both in industry and within your MBA?

Diversity has always been a core value for me, both in my professional life and within my MBA programme. I have been actively involved in various initiatives aimed at fostering inclusive work environments and supporting underrepresented groups. My career to date has focused on the travel, sports and education sectors, centred around building and executing experiences for people, within which I have observed the need for inclusivity.

When I started my career, there was limited consideration given to the LGBTQUA+ community. Sports and group tours focused on traditional beliefs of the gender binary dictating opportunities to access certain experiences. Throughout my career, I have strived to create more inclusive environments by implementing change within the business and throughout the product cycle. I designed bespoke travel packages for LGBTQUA+ student unions, for over 100 universities throughout the UK, enabling safe travel opportunities for the touring students and work opportunities for LGBTQUA+ staff. I travelled to our destinations to develop packages of more inclusive nightlife venues in destinations that were not typically inclusive. Change was also implemented during product launch - changing language, expanding the sign-up experience and room assignment process. I led operational overhauls and ensured continuous improvement.

How have you been embodying Warwick Business School’s Change Maker values and having an impact on your sector/society during your MBA?

Warwick Business School’s "Change Maker" values resonate deeply with me, especially the focus on ethical leadership, social responsibility, and sustainable business practices. I have embraced these principles by working on projects that challenge traditional business models and promote positive societal change. For instance, in one of my individual projects, the core focus was on developing an innovative business structure that concentrated heavily on supporting sustainable practices.

What impact has the scholarship had on your academic and personal goals?

The scholarship has significantly impacted both my academic and personal goals by giving me the freedom to fully engage with my studies without worrying about the financial burden. This has allowed me to dedicate time and effort to research, coursework, and extracurricular activities, enhancing my academic performance. Personally, it has boosted my self-confidence, reaffirming my belief that hard work and passion can open doors to incredible opportunities. It has also provided me with the chance to connect with a network of like-minded individuals.

Do you have any advice for others considering applying for a scholarship?

If you're considering applying for a scholarship, my advice is to be authentic and passionate in your application, highlighting not only your academic potential but also display a clear vision of how you plan to use your education to make a difference. Reflect on your personal journey, goals, and the ways in which you can contribute to your sector or society. Don’t be afraid to show your unique perspective, as that’s often what sets you apart from other applicants.
