Tell us a bit about yourself
I am a seasoned auditor with over eight years of experience, with a particular focus on the Financial Services Sector. I am currently based in the Channel Islands, working with PwC, where I manage complex audit engagements for a diverse portfolio of clients. I am a Certified Public Accountant of Kenya and an alumnus of Strathmore University where I pursued a degree in Commerce specialising in Finance. My commitment to continuous learning with a focus on global perspective has been a guiding force throughout my career. The desire to expand my knowledge and sharpen my leadership skills led me to pursue my long-held dream of joining Warwick Business School (WBS). This ambition took root in 2017 while I was still working in Africa and I have consistently nurtured this ambition culminating in my move to the Channel Islands. My presence in the present location provided the perfect opportunity to apply and further my education.
What motivated you to apply for a scholarship?
My motivation to apply for the Black in Business scholarship was deeply rooted in my belief in the transformative potential of education. Throughout my career, I have witnessed how advanced knowledge and a broader skill set can create significant ripples, not only in one’s professional trajectory but also in the ability to positively impact society. The scholarship offers more than financial relief; it is an avenue to devote myself wholly to my academic pursuits while unlocking opportunities for both personal and professional development. Additionally, I was drawn to the vibrant, diverse community at WBS, one that embraces innovation and fosters intellectual curiosity—a perfect environment to thrive and contribute and I believed that this community would provide me with the intellectual stimulation and support I needed to succeed in my studies and achieve my career goals.
What does the scholarship mean to you?
For me, this scholarship stands as a testament to my perseverance, commitment, and aspirations, inspired by the words of the former U.S. president Barack Obama, 'Yes we can.' It opens the door to a global network of leaders and problem solvers, offering me an unparalleled opportunity to contribute my expertise while gleaning invaluable insights from others. More significantly, it carries a profound sense of responsibility, the duty to give back to my community as well as serve the world, raise my professional standards and inspire the next generation of leaders. This scholarship reflects the trust invested in my potential, and I am resolute in my determination to make meaningful contributions in return.
How have you been championing diversity, both in industry and within your MBA?
Championing diversity has been central to my approach throughout my career. I have had the privilege of working with multicultural teams, guiding colleagues from diverse backgrounds, and fostering an inclusive work environment. I have not only been intentional about coaching and mentoring individuals but also helping them navigate the unique challenges that arise in the financial services sector. During my MBA, I have actively engaged in collaborative projects that bring together individuals from different industries and cultural backgrounds. I firmly believe that diversity drives creativity and innovation, and I consistently advocate for inclusive and participatory leadership in both my professional and academic spheres.
How have you been embodying Warwick Business School’s Change Maker values and having an impact on your sector/society during your MBA?
Warwick Business School’s Change Maker values resonate deeply with my professional ethos. As an auditor of note, I have always been committed to upholding professional ethos, and promoting financial integrity and values that align with the principles of meaningful change. During my MBA, I have focused on initiatives that address financial inclusion and sustainability in the financial services sector, working towards solutions that generate long-term, positive impact. I see education as a powerful instrument for change, and I am using my MBA experience to champion responsible leadership and advocate for sustainable growth within my industry and my country, Kenya.
What impact has the scholarship had on your academic and personal goals?
The scholarship has been pivotal in inspiring my fellow countrymen, demonstrating to them that with determination and passion, any goal is attainable. It has also afforded me financial stability therefore I can focus on my studies without worrying about my tuition fees.
