Matthias is interested in the relationship between finance and the
natural environment. His research investigates how this relationship
is being governed and organised with a focus on the role that
knowledge and devices play in these processes. Bridging the discplines
of economic sociology, science & technology studies, and
organisation studies, Matthias employes ethnographic and other
qualitative methods to understand the role of finance in the
Anthropocene. He is currently investigating the design of Implied
Temperature Rise (ITR) tools in the context of a wider multi-sited
team ethnography together with Katharina Dittrich and Julius Kob.
Matthias is also a Visiting Fellow at LSE's Grantham Research
Institute on Climate Change and the Environment where he works on
issues of green central banking.

Before joining WBS, Matthias completed his PhD at the LSE. His
PhD research traces how the concept of climate risk was turned from a
fringe idea into an issue of financial stability. The empirical focus
of this research lies on the Task Force on Climate-related Financial
Disclosures (TCFD) and the design of the NGFS Climate Scenarios.
Matthias has been conducting research on green and sustainable finance
since 2016 in the EU, the US, and the UK.
