Full-time MBA candidate and entrepreneur Jo Esebame shares how the Black in Business scholarship has shaped his journey; from working to empower underrepresented groups in business, to spearheading initiatives to support communities in developing countries.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

My name is Jo Esebame and I am a Nigerian entrepreneur currently undertaking my MBA at Warwick Business School (WBS). I have always been passionate about creating solutions that address the unique challenges faced by people in Nigeria and across Africa. My entrepreneurial journey began with the founding of my company which focuses on energy trading and distribution.

With a background in environmental science and aviation, I have combined my technical expertise with my business acumen to drive growth and innovation. The decision to pursue an MBA at WBS was fuelled by my desire to gain a global perspective on business management, enhance my leadership skills and connect with a network of like-minded professionals.

At WBS, I am actively involved in various student organisations and initiatives that promote entrepreneurship and social impact. I am committed to using the knowledge and experiences gained from my MBA to further expand my ventures and contribute to the economic development of Nigeria and the broader African continent.

What motivated you to apply for a scholarship?

I applied for the Black in Business scholarship because I believe in the power of education to drive change. The scholarship presented an opportunity to pursue my MBA at a prestigious institution like WBS which aligns with my professional and personal goals. Additionally, it was an avenue to join a community that values diversity and inclusivity and I wanted to contribute to and benefit from such an environment.

What does the scholarship mean to you?

The scholarship means more than just financial support; it represents a commitment to diversity and the empowerment of underrepresented groups in business. It acknowledges my potential and provides me with the resources to realise my aspirations. It's also a platform to inspire others from similar backgrounds to pursue their dreams and believe in their potential.

How have you been championing diversity, both in industry and within your MBA?

I have been actively promoting diversity by participating in and organising events that highlight the importance of inclusivity. Within my MBA cohort, I have initiated discussions and workshops and an Entrepreneurship Festival focused on the value of diverse perspectives in business strategy and leadership. In the industry, I mentor young professionals from underrepresented backgrounds, helping them navigate their career paths and advocating for inclusive hiring practices in my network.

How have you been embodying Warwick Business School’s Change Maker values and having an impact on your sector/society during your MBA?

I have embraced the Change Maker values where I serve as President of the WBS Entrepreneurship Club and lead projects that address social and economic challenges. Furthermore, in my business sector, I am spearheading a sustainable business initiative that utilises solar energy, reduces dependence on fossil fuels and promotes clean energy use. This initiative is aimed at creating a seamless transition between grid and solar power thereby guaranteeing cooking even during power outages in local communities in developing countries. Through my coursework and extracurricular activities, I consistently strive to apply innovative thinking and ethical leadership to create positive societal impacts, demonstrating the transformative power of business.

What impact has the scholarship had on your academic and personal goals?

The scholarship has significantly impacted my academic journey by allowing me to focus entirely on my studies without much financial stress. It has opened doors to networking opportunities, leadership roles and access to cutting-edge resources. Personally, it has boosted my confidence and reinforced my commitment to driving change. It has also given me a sense of responsibility to give back and support others who are pursuing similar paths.

Do you have any advice for others considering applying for a scholarship?

My advice to others would be to believe in your worth and the unique perspective you bring. Take the time to articulate your goals clearly and demonstrate how the scholarship can help you achieve them. Be proactive in seeking opportunities to contribute to and benefit from the scholarship community. Remember, the application process is not just about what you have done, but also about your potential to make a difference.
