Life at Singapore Management University

Undergraduate student, Shaan Bagol, shares her experience studying abroad at Singapore Management University.

Why I chose Warwick Business School (WBS)

When choosing a university, WBS stood out to me for its strong global reputation, emphasis on real-world application and commitment to developing both academic and professional skills. I was particularly drawn to my course, International Management, because of its balance between theory and practice, as well as the opportunity to gain international exposure through a year abroad. From the outset, I knew I wanted to study abroad in Singapore, a global business hub that aligned closely with my academic interests and career aspirations.

Applying for a year abroad

Although I had a clear goal in mind, I understood the importance of thoroughly researching my options. I explored WBS partner universities in Singapore, carefully considering the academic fit, location and availability of accommodation, as some institutions offered university housing whilst others did not.

The CareersPlus team played a valuable role during the process by connecting me with students who had previously completed a year abroad. Speaking directly with someone who had studied in Singapore allowed me to ask detailed questions about academic expectations, student life and living arrangements. These conversations helped clarify my decision and ultimately reinforced my preference for a university located in Singapore’s central city area.

Life at Singapore Management University

I spent my year abroad at Singapore Management University, and it proved to be one of the most enriching experiences of my university life. Living in Singapore exposed me to a vibrant mix of cultures, languages and perspectives. Academically, the seminar-style teaching encouraged active participation, critical discussion and independent thinking.

A particularly rewarding aspect of my studies was the opportunity to present to real Singaporean companies, acting as a consultant to address real-world problem statements. This hands-on approach allowed me to directly apply theoretical concepts in a practical setting, making seminars both engaging and impactful.

Socially, I formed meaningful friendships with students from all over the world. This experience was further enhanced by my role as an Exchange Student Ambassador, where I promoted the exchange programme to prospective students and worked closely with fellow exchange students, helping to build a strong sense of community.

Travel also played a significant role in my year abroad. I had the opportunity to visit ten countries across Asia, experiencing different cultures, languages and ways of life. One particularly memorable moment was visiting temples in Chiang Mai, Thailand, where I spoke with a Buddhist monk about his way of living – an experience that encouraged deep reflection and pushed me beyond my comfort zone.

Skills gained and personal growth

The skills I developed at WBS, such as critical thinking, presentation skills, adaptability and teamwork were invaluable during my time abroad. Group projects were fast-paced and highly collaborative, and my prior experience at Warwick gave me the confidence to contribute ideas effectively and work productively within diverse teams. Strong time management and self-discipline also proved essential when adapting to a new academic system.

Reflecting on the journey

Before and after my year abroad, the CareersPlus team continued to offer support, helping me reflect on my experience and translate it into tangible skills for future applications. This guidance enabled me to articulate how my year abroad contributed to academic development and long-term career goals.

My advice to students considering a year abroad is to embrace uncertainty, remain open-minded, and make the most of every opportunity - both academically and socially. A year abroad challenges you in the best possible way and encourages significant personal growth.

I would wholeheartedly recommend a year abroad to future students. It is a transformative experience that builds confidence, independence, and global awareness. These qualities are invaluable both during university and beyond.
