Why I chose to study at WBS and why I'm glad I did

11 December 2025

For undergraduate student Aman Haria, studying at WBS has been more than an academic journey – it’s been an experience that’s challenged, inspired, and transformed him. From exceptional teaching to a global community, Aman reflects on why he chose WBS, and how it has shaped who he is today.

The learning experience

One of the things that drew me to WBS was its reputation for combining academic excellence with real world application – and this is something I have experienced first-hand. The teaching style goes far beyond lectures and preparing you for exams. Rather than just learning theories and concepts, WBS’s learning structures include seminars that are interactive, with discussions based and built around real business issues. This makes learning more interesting, dynamic and relevant. For example, in the audit module, we were given a real-life audit problem and the seminar tutor acted as the client. After a group discussion, we were able to apply our knowledge learnt in lectures to question the seminar tutor, helping us identify risks and issues in a past audit.

The global community

WBS is very diverse and attracts people from different countries, cultures and backgrounds. From the very beginning, I was part of an environment where no two perspectives were the same, and that’s what made it so enriching. Interacting with such a wide range of people helped me look at situations from numerous different angles and truly appreciate different points of view. Every discussion brings a mix of ideas and experiences that challenge the way you think and encourages you to view problems through a global lens.

Beyond academics, it’s also a community that celebrates its global nature – from cultural society events, to casual conversations where you learn something new about different parts of the world. Being part of such an inclusive, international environment has not only broadened my perspective but also helped me grow personally and professionally.

Preparing you for the workplace

Another reason I chose to study at WBS is the culture of drive and discipline which it instils in its students – it truly sets WBS students apart from any other university. The academic rigour isn’t just about grades - it’s about building a professional mindset. From managing multiple group projects to balancing coursework with extracurricular commitments, WBS pushes you to develop resilience, time management, and accountability.

I was able to see the impact during my placement year. The habits I developed at WBS – staying organised, effectively communicating in group settings and taking initiative translated directly into the professional environment. I felt more confident handling deadlines, contributing ideas to meetings and adapting to changes. The transition from university to the workplace felt natural, and I credit that to the strong work ethic that WBS fosters in every student.

CareersPlus team

WBS students are very lucky to have their own careers service - CareersPlus, in addition to the central university careers team. CareersPlus provides personalised career coaching to WBS students. This is through various forms including:

-    CV coaching sessions.
-    One-to-one career services – CV and cover letter support, mock interviews or general career advice.
-    Providing numerous application resources.

When I was applying for my placement year, I used the services of the CareersPlus team who helped me refine my CV as well as conducted mock interviews which helped me improve my answers and build my confidence. The application resources helped me prepare for the different tests in the application process, and their guide also assisted me in the assessment centres, which resulted in me obtaining a placement at EY.

Looking back, I’m really glad I chose WBS. It’s given me so much more than just a degree. From inspiring teaching and career support, to friendships and experiences I’ll always value, WBS has truly prepared me to step into the workplace with purpose and ambition.
