- worker representation and voice, with a particular focus on the EU's Information and Consultation Directive and social dialogue in supply chains
- global labour governance with a particular focus on the response to the 2013 Rana Plaza disaster

Jimmy joined the University of Warwick as Associate Professor in September 2010 from Queen's University Belfast, from where he obtained his PhD under the supervision of Paul Teague. In October 2013, he was promoted to Reader in Industrial Relations and subsequently was promoted to Professor of Industrial Relations in June 2015.
From July 2015 to July 2007, Jimmy was academic lead for the interdisciplinary Global Research Priority- Global Governance at the University of Warwick. In addition to the GRP Global Governance, he is a member of the Industrial Relations Research Unit (IRRU) and Connecting Research in Employment and Work (CREW) at the University of Warwick.

Jimmy is currently Associate Editor of the Human Resource Management Journal. In addition to this, he has been guest editor for special issues of the International Journal of Human Resource Management (partnership and mutual gains) , Work, Employment and Society (the State and Work) and Human Relations (Global supply chains and social relations at work). He is also co-guest editor for a special issue of the British Journal of Industrial Relations which is currently in preparation. He is a member of the ESRC Peer Review College and the British Journal of Management Editorial Board.

Jimmy comes from the Inishowen peninsula in Donegal, Republic of Ireland. Finally, when possible, Jimmy tries to enjoy attending Arsenal games (though the frequency of such occasions being enjoyable diminishes year on year).
