Alumni Spotlight: Dr. Abuagila Almahdi on Strategic Leadership and the DBA Experience at WBS
Vice Chairman of Corinthia Group and Warwick Business School DBA graduate, Dr. Abuagila Almahdi, shares insights from his professional journey and academic research, and reflects on the value of the WBS alumni network.
Dr. Abuagila Almahdi is a senior executive with a distinguished career in corporate governance, strategic investment, and stakeholder management, particularly within the hospitality and real estate sectors. As Vice Chairman of Corinthia Group, he has played a pivotal role in shaping the organisation’s strategic direction, balancing institutional shareholder expectations with long-term brand value creation.
A recent graduate of the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) programme at Warwick Business School, Dr. Almahdi conducted research titled “A Critical Evaluation of the Factors Driving Shareholder Value in the Hospitality Industry: A Case Study of Corinthia Group.” His work offers both theoretical insights and practical recommendations for industry leaders navigating complex ownership structures and macroeconomic disruptions.
Using a mixed-methods approach, Dr. Almahdi combined qualitative interviews with 30 Corinthia Group stakeholders and quantitative analysis of 187 international hotels between 2010 and 2022. His key findings include:
- Asset-light companies consistently generate higher shareholder value than asset-heavy firms
- Institutional investors often favour asset-heavy strategies, reflecting differing strategic priorities
- The COVID-19 pandemic had a limited long-term impact on the relationship between asset strategy and shareholder value.
Beyond his corporate role, Dr. Almahdi remains an active member of the WBS global alumni community, sharing insights on ownership structures, shareholder relations, and investment strategies. He views the alumni network as a vital platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and mentoring future leaders.
“Warwick Business School has provided me with the resources, networks, and research depth to approach strategic decision-making with both analytical rigour and practical impact. The alumni community is a key resource for sharing perspectives, exploring collaborations, and supporting growth. I look forward to contributing to this global network and building professional connections.”
