Top 5 Things to Think About When Choosing Your University

27 November 2025

Choosing a university is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make in your life. It’s not just about where you’ll study, it’s about where you’ll live, grow, and prepare for your future. With so many options available, it can feel overwhelming. To help you, here are the top five things to consider before making your choice, including personal experiences from my time at Warwick.

Course modules & content

Your course modules shape what you’ll learn during your degree, so it’s important to explore them carefully. Look through the module list to see which topics are covered and whether they match your interests and career goals.

For example, when I was applying to universities, I made sure the courses I considered included marketing modules, as this was an area I knew I wanted to learn more about. I study Business Management, and one of the things I really love about my course is that in my final year, the majority of my modules are elective. This gives me the flexibility to focus on the areas that interest me most.

A well-structured course with engaging content can keep you motivated and help you build the skills you need for the future, so it’s important that the modules and content align with your interests.

Location

Where you study matters just as much as what you study. Think about whether you would thrive in a lively city, a quiet town, or a coastal campus. Consider the local climate, cost of living, transportation, and lifestyle of the area, as this will be your home for the next few years.

I chose Warwick because of its location and surroundings. The campus is within walking distance of a shopping centre with affordable grocery stores, which makes everyday life convenient. It is also home to Gibbet Hill Wood, a peaceful woodland area, and several picturesque lakes, including Tocil Lake, perfect for relaxing or taking a break from studying. Additionally, Warwick is close to Leamington Spa and Kenilworth, where there are plenty of shops, cafés, and restaurants to explore.

Cost & financial support

University can be expensive, so it’s important to plan ahead. Compare tuition fees, accommodation costs, and everyday expenses. Look into scholarships, grants, and part-time job options, as these can help ease financial pressure and make your experience more enjoyable and affordable.

I feel extremely lucky to be a Lion Rock Scholarship holder, which has helped reduce my financial burden and allowed me to pursue my dreams. There are many scholarships and financial support options available, so please never feel like you have to carry that burden alone, as there are always resources to support you throughout your university journey.

Career opportunities

A strong career network can make a huge difference after graduation. Check whether the university offers internships, work placements, or dedicated career services. Look at graduate employment rates and connections with the industry, as these can help you transition confidently into the workplace.

At Warwick Business School, for example, there’s an Undergraduate Careers Bootcamp held each year at The Shard in London. This event connects students with leading employers such as L’Oréal, IBM, Rund, and LVMH, providing invaluable networking opportunities, industry insights, and a chance to develop the professional skills needed to succeed after graduation.

Student support & campus life

Finally, consider the community you’ll be part of. Does the university offer safety, security, and wellbeing support? Is the campus culture diverse and inclusive? The right environment can make your university years not only successful but also memorable. You will thrive in a community that values diversity, inclusion, mental health, and personal growth.

At the University of Warwick, the Community Safety Team are there to protect the safety and wellbeing of every student, staff member, and visitor. They provide a 24-hour service, 365 days a year, offering first aid, wellbeing support, crime prevention, emergency response, and other immediate services, ensuring that everyone on campus feels safe and supported.

Choosing the right university for you

Choosing a university is a personal journey. There’s no single “perfect” choice, the best university for you is the one that fits your goals, values, and lifestyle. Do your research, visit campuses if you can, and trust your instincts. Your university experience will shape your future academically, personally, and socially. Take the time to find a place where you can truly grow, feel at home, and make the most of every opportunity.
