Case Study: IBM

How IBM uses early talent to spark innovation and fresh thinking

Where they were

IBM works in a fast changing environment where innovation depends on people who can learn quickly, think creatively and bring fresh perspectives into established teams. They were looking for a way to connect with emerging talent earlier, without taking resource away from critical work. The challenge was finding a partnership that created value both for the business and for students.

How we collaborated

IBM partnered with WBS Foundation Year, Master's and MBA students to explore business challenges from new angles. These students approached each brief with curiosity and enthusiasm and were willing to take on challenges head first. Their ideas helped IBM teams look at familiar issues in unexpected ways and supported early thinking on proofs of concept and forward-looking projects.

The collaboration was simple by design. IBM could explore new ideas without risk. Students brought creativity and energy, while the structure of the programme ensured that experienced staff could stay focused on priority work.

Jon McNamara, UK University lead, says;

Working with WBS students is incredibly rewarding because of their enthusiasm and eagerness to learn. Their fresh perspectives can lead to innovative solutions and a dynamic work environment.

Impact for IBM

For IBM, the partnership delivered clear value. It brought fresh perspectives that challenged assumptions, helped shape early stage innovation and proofs of concept, and offered a low risk way to explore new approaches without diverting key staff. It also gave IBM a clearer view of emerging talent with strong potential and supported their commitment to building a more diverse and inclusive future pipeline.

Impact for students

WBS students had the chance to apply their learning to real business challenges, build confidence and see how their ideas could make a genuine difference. The experience strengthened their employability skills by giving them concrete examples of applied problem solving, adaptability and resilience.  We encourage our students to highlight these experiences when applying for roles. It shows employers they are motivated, proactive and ready to take on new challenges.
