The Strategic Mindset of Leadership

How can you give your organisation a strategic edge?

This Postgraduate Award will enable you to explore how leadership is changing in the face of the VUCA world and understand what it takes to build strategic leadership capabilities that are future focused and change oriented. It will also help you to understand what it means to behave like an adaptive strategic leader, learn about the essential components of strategic leadership, such as strategic thinking and acquire tools that will help you develop your capacity for strategic thought.

You will cover the following key specialist subject areas: measuring and transforming organisational energy, digital transformation, adaptive leadership, purposeful leadership and leading with a paradox mind-set. Although this PGA is driven by theory, you will be encouraged to apply your learnings to real-life situations and contexts, enabling you to understand the skills that are required for strategic leadership.

Duration

This Postgraduate Award will run across four days of face-to-face teaching at our London base in The Shard, with a six week window to complete your assignments.

Structure

  • Day one: To begin you will explore how the world and our environment have changed and build an understanding of how uncertain the business world is, and how this necessitates strategic leadership.
  • Day two and three: You'll take a deep dive into theoretical concepts that will be used to unlock this module, before looking at how you can apply this to business or organisation. You will dig into challenges from your own context in the class and work to reframe how you can lead and tackle these issues.
  • Day four: You will explore leadership capabilities that will enable you to thrive in the world and look at how theory can be applied to leadership challenges.

To consolidate your learning, you will complete a couple of assignments that typically include a mix of direct essay questions and reflective work in which you analyse a leadership challenge. You will explore the application of leadership theory to evaluate the challenge and then identify solutions.

What will you learn?

  • Understand how strategic leadership requires an appetite for paradox, to work with problems that cannot be solved, such as cost vs quality, value vs results, short-term vs long term
  • You will build tools and techniques to work with paradox contentions
  • You will understand the theory and develop skills to become adaptive leaders and develop an understanding of how you can help your organisation to become more adaptive
  • You will understand how organisations can recover from and predict a crisis
  • You will be able to create relational resilience and tools to measure and diagnose energy in an organisation, understanding how you can transform toxic energy into productive energy.
