Patient Adherence: A global health concern

From rural Africa to renowned private hospitals, patient adherence is an issue of global concern. In 2003, the World Health Organization observed that, in developed countries, adherence among patients suffering chronic diseases averaged only 50%, whilst the degree of impact in developing countries was assumed to be even higher.

Sadly, the situation has changed little in 10 years. Within the UK, the recent Aston Medication Adherence Study found that one in three patients was putting their health at risk because they did not take their medication properly and this is costing the NHS an estimated £500 million every year.

Non-adherence is becoming a global health concern in desperate need of treatment. While it is a complex problem, the health benefits, cost savings and potential revenue opportunities can no longer be ignored.

Building upon the success of the inaugural WBS Case Competition, this event will:

  • Define non-adherence and why it matters
  • Identify key reasons for non-adherent behaviour
  • Demonstrate why non-adherence is not simply a patient problem
  • Share different stakeholder perspectives
  • Outline potential solutions
  • Explore who holds the keys to solving this global challenge
