Why Do Innovation Ecosystems Require Continuity? The Case of AstraZeneca
Innovation ecosystems are finely balanced networks of organisations — companies, universities, start-ups, governments, and capital providers — that cooperate and compete to innovate and bring new products to the market. In this mini lecture, we analyse how Pfizer attempted a hostile takeover of AstraZeneca that threatened to disrupt AstraZeneca’s innovation ecosystem. This takeover battle then cast a long shadow over AstraZeneca during the subsequent years. We conclude with practical recommendations for protecting stakeholders and maintaining continuity in innovation ecosystems.
