I am an Industrial Engineer from Peru with professional experience in supply chain management and operations, primarily in the paper industry. Working in this sector has been both rewarding and challenging, as it is highly dynamic and competitive, requiring constant adaptation to changing demand and market conditions. This experience taught me how to be flexible, make data-driven decisions, and manage complex operational challenges. Over time, I realised that to create greater impact, I needed to complement my technical skills with strategic insight and leadership capabilities, which led me to pursue the Full-time MBA at Warwick Business School.
Being from Peru and having the opportunity to share insights from my culture and region with my cohort has been very gratifying, while also learning from a truly global group of peers. I was also fortunate to receive the Generación del Bicentenario scholarship from my country, which made this opportunity possible and reinforced my commitment to making the most of it.
Why Warwick Business School
What initially attracted me to Warwick Business School was its strong reputation, combined with its practical and global approach to learning. I was particularly interested in how the MBA equips students to transition into new sectors and roles, leveraging both the prestige of the University and the strength of its network.
A global and diverse experience
One of the elements I value most is the diversity of the cohort. I never imagined that my closest friends and the people I would bond with the most would be from Southeast Asia! That is one of the most unique aspects of the MBA: building friendships and connections that you simply cannot find easily in your own country. These interactions have not only enriched my learning but also shaped my personal growth.
Studying for an MBA is intense, but highly rewarding. You are constantly balancing lectures, group work, networking, and career planning. At the same time, this dynamic environment mirrors real business challenges, which makes the experience very practical and relevant.
Learning and academic highlights
One of my favourite modules has been Corporate Reporting and Decision Making. Coming from a non-accounting background, I initially found finance intimidating. However, the professors structured the module in a highly accessible way, combining theory with simulation exercises that allowed me to interpret financial statements, evaluate company performance, and use financial information to support decision-making. This module was crucial in helping me develop financial literacy as a manager, understand the bigger picture behind the numbers, and engage in informed discussions with financial partners.
The university community is fantastic, with a wide variety of societies and groups that allow us to continue connecting with people outside of the classroom. Even within the MBA, there are specific societies that provide opportunities to meet others, relax, and take a break from the pressures of the programme, a balance that is essential for our wellbeing and performance.
Career support and future goals
WBS CareersPlus has been invaluable in supporting my career transition. Their support has helped me communicate my experience in the paper sector in a way that facilitates transitioning into other industries and pursuing roles with greater strategic impact.
Before starting the MBA, my goal was to gain an international experience that would help me expand my network and move into roles where I could leverage both my operational expertise and the strategic and leadership skills developed during the MBA. I believe the programme is helping me achieve this by providing the tools, confidence, and network needed to make such a transition.
So far, I have gained a more strategic perspective, improved my ability to work in diverse teams, and developed the confidence to navigate complex business environments.
Balancing the MBA and advice for applicants
Maintaining an academic workload-life balance can be challenging, especially during peak periods, but it is manageable with good prioritisation. The MBA has taught me to be more intentional with my time and energy, a skill that will serve me well in any future leadership role.
My advice to anyone considering an MBA is to be clear about your goals but remain open to unexpected opportunities; you never know what destiny has in store for you! Step out of your comfort zone, engage with your cohort, and fully immerse yourself in the experience. The MBA is not just about academics, it is about transformation, and the more you invest in it, the more you will gain.
