Tell us a bit about yourself

I’m Wacera from Nairobi, Kenya, an outgoing coffee-lover. Currently, I work as a Management Consultant at OmiFlo, a biotech company where I am responsible for developing and implementing the company's strategic vision and driving growth. In addition to studying a Global Online MBA, I’m also building a specialty coffee company called Over a Drink, sharing Kenya's exceptional coffee with the world.

Why did you choose Warwick Business School for your MBA?

I chose Warwick Business School (WBS) for its global reputation for academic excellence and innovation. I was particularly drawn to their core values of curiosity, openness, relentless and excellence as guidelines in pursuit for a better world. The flexible nature of the programme, which allows me to balance my professional commitments in my home country with my studies, was also a perfect fit. I was seeking a programme that would not only enhance my business knowledge but also provide me with a global perspective and network.

How have you found online learning? What particular benefits does this have for you?

Online learning has been an amazing experience. It provides the flexibility I need to effectively manage my professional and entrepreneurial responsibilities while pursuing my studies. This model allows me to attend lectures and engage with course material at times that suit my schedule, without compromising my other duties. A major benefit has been the ability to immediately test and apply the concepts and frameworks I learn in the classroom to real business challenges at my company, creating a synergy between my academic and professional lives.

How have you found the online learning technology at Warwick Business School, such as my.wbs and SmartStage?

The online learning technology at WBS has been great. Platforms like my.wbs and SmartStage® have made the virtual learning experience engaging and immersive. The technology is intuitive and user-friendly, which has made it easy to connect with professors and fellow students from across the globe. Additionally, the programme team is always available and happy to assist whenever there are technical challenges.

What elements of the programme do you value the most and why?

The overseas trip to campus as part of the Residential Week was my  first time in the UK, and it was far beyond my imagination. The University of Warwick campus in Coventry is a delightful learning environment to experience. The global experience, from  studying and travel, to building networks, are my most valuable elements of the programme. It exposes your mind to greater possibilities, diverse perspectives and builds your confidence.

What is it like studying for an MBA?

Studying for an MBA is a challenging, intense, but incredibly rewarding experience. It demands a significant commitment of time and energy, requiring a high degree of personal discipline and strong time management skills. It's a journey of continuous learning, both in academic theory and in practical application. It's not just about the coursework; it's also about the personal growth that comes from being pushed outside of your comfort zone, collaborating with peers, and gaining a comprehensive, high-level view of the business world.

Tell us about the community at Warwick Business School.

The community at WBS is truly one of its greatest strengths. My cohort is a diverse and highly supportive group of professionals, and I've been fortunate to serve as a Student-Staff Liaison Committee (SSLC) representative for my cohort.

This role has allowed me to be an active part of the community, promoting a collaborative environment between the programme team and students. Meeting fellow students during Residential Week and engaging in person was fantastic and I can’t wait to meet them again in September during our second in-person week. The wider global and Kenyan network is incredible, providing me with connections to an expansive alumni base that offers a wealth of knowledge and opportunities.

Have you received support from the careers team? If so, how has it helped you?

Yes, I have received invaluable support from the CareersPlus team, during the Residential Week and online career coaching. Their guidance has been instrumental in helping me refine my career plans, articulate my value proposition, and position myself for future roles. The WBS CareersPlus platform also has incredible career resources and the events are equally helpful.

Can you tell us about your career plans? What’s next for you?

My career plan is to transition into a management and international role, either in Kenya or abroad. I am particularly interested in pursuing opportunities in strategy & consulting, development or finance, where I can apply my experience in finance and business management to drive growth, change transformation or operational excellence in a global context. The entrepreneurial studies and support will continue to assist in the growth of my coffee company. The knowledge and network from my MBA will be the key enablers for this next chapter.

What did you hope to get out of our programme? What have you actually got?

When I started the programme, I hoped to gain a deeper understanding of the ever-evolving business world, and to build a strong global network. Although I’m in my first year, I can confidently say the programme has delivered on all these and exceeded my expectations. I have not only enhanced my business skills and expanded my network, but I have also developed a more advanced and optimistic way of thinking about business and economic challenges.

Do you have any advice for anyone currently thinking about studying for an MBA?

My advice for anyone considering an MBA is to be clear on what you hope to achieve. Be prepared for a significant time commitment. Most importantly, embrace the collaborative nature of the programme—the network you build and the insights you gain from your peers will be as valuable as the academic knowledge you acquire. It's an investment in yourself, both personally and professionally. Keep an open mind and enjoy the journey.
