Filippo Guerrieri is an MSc Finance graduate, now applying his expertise as a Quantitative Researcher at Goldman Sachs. His journey demonstrates how WBS equips students with the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills to turn curiosity into expertise and academic insight into real-world impact.

When I decided to pursue a Master’s degree, I was looking for more than just academic knowledge - I wanted a transformative experience that would broaden my perspective, strengthen my skills, and propel me into a fulfilling career.

Warwick Business School stood out for its global reputation and its unique blend of academic excellence, practical relevance, and strong industry connections. My time at WBS was definitely a life-changing event.

Why choose WBS for MSc Finance?

I chose the MSc Finance course at WBS because it aligned perfectly with both my interests and my career aspirations. The curriculum offered a solid foundation in theory, but more importantly, it was designed to reflect the real-world challenges businesses face today.

I was drawn to the practical approach - case studies, group work, simulations, and access to thought leaders made learning dynamic and impactful. Thanks to the MSc Finance, I built a solid background in the fields I was most interested in: financial markets and portfolio management. It was a springboard for my career in asset management.

My time at WBS was intense, inspiring, and incredibly rewarding. The learning environment was diverse and collaborative.

I worked with peers from across the globe, each bringing unique perspectives and experiences. The faculty were not only knowledgeable but genuinely invested in our development. Beyond the classroom, I participated in workshops, networking events, and industry panels that gave me exposure to a wide range of opportunities and career paths.

How a Master’s can launch a career in asset management

The transition from student to professional was both exciting and challenging. Like many graduates, I had moments of uncertainty, but I felt well-prepared thanks to the skills and confidence I developed at WBS. I took time to explore different opportunities and industries before landing in my current role.

Having studied in such a competitive and international environment gave me the confidence to seek a job without any geographical limitations. That period of exploration was crucial, as it helped me clarify what I wanted and what kind of impact I was hoping to make.

Today, I work as a Quantitative Researcher at Goldman Sachs Asset Management. My role is mainly focused on research, involving the development of new quantitative strategies through the exploration of many different data sources. I also support the portfolio manager in investment decisions while working to enhance our internal processes and portfolio construction algorithms.

It’s a dynamic and fast-paced environment that challenges me daily and keeps me learning.

What I enjoy most about my job is the problem-solving aspect. No two days are the same, and I love having to think critically and adapt quickly while trying to meet client’s requirements, which change as fast as the market environment. It’s incredibly satisfying to see ideas come to life and to know that my work contributes to something larger.

How to make the most of Warwick’s careers team

A lot of what I learned during my MSc continues to influence how I approach my work. From analytical tools to communication strategies, the course gave me both the hard and soft skills I use daily. Perhaps more importantly, WBS instilled in me a mindset of continuous improvement and curiosity - two qualities that are essential in today’s ever-changing business landscape. Since my time at WBS, I always strive towards excellence.

The MSc CareersPlus & Employer Relations team was instrumental in my journey. From refining my CV to preparing for interviews and connecting me with alumni, their guidance gave me the edge I needed. I especially appreciated their personalised approach - they took the time to understand my goals and helped me map out a realistic path to get there.

Looking ahead, I’m focused on deepening my expertise and exploring leadership opportunities within my field. My current goal is to become the go-to person in my team for research topics and infrastructure knowledge. I also hope to play a bigger role in knowledge-sharing and team development in the future.

If you’re considering an MSc at WBS, my advice is simple: go for it, but go all in. Make the most of everything on offer - from academics to networking events, guest lectures to career services. The experience will be as rich and rewarding as you make it.

Be open to new perspectives, stay curious, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. But more importantly: enjoy your time there!
